Winter Driving

Would road salt stop you from drivin your Vette in the winter on a dry beautiful day?

  • No way...I'm taking her out (not worrying about the road salt).

Ok...for those of us who live in snow country and actually have a weekend where the roads are completely dry...the sun is shining....would you drive your baby? There is salt on the roads that probably will cover the bottom of the car.

Is it worth it??

Mike

Unless you have a heated garage or a "do it yourself" carwash next door, NO it is not worth it. You do not want to keep all the salt & sand on the undercarriage of your Vette! That is my humble opinion!! :beer

It's funny you ask this, because it's a nice day today but of course it has snowed for like the past month and salt is covering the roads. So, we're not taking the Vette out. We can be more patient. :(

TR :D

In my opinion , the worst thing you can do for a car is leave it set for long periods of time . If a little salt in the air would kill a Vette then we wouldn't have members liveing on the coasts . I've seen what the salt air in those places can to to trailers and such over long periods of time , so I know there is salt in the air . I think salt does it's damage to cars when its on a wet sloppy road and splashes up under your car and stays there for a long time . The newer cars have loads of sensors that seem to stick or go bad from lack use . JMO . Cliff

I see what you mean. We're going to start her up today just so that it doesn't sit for too long. Hopefully it won't be much longer with this snow and salt and then we can get her back on the road. :)

If its a DRY winter day,I take mine out on the Interstate once a month for a run. If there is melting snow or ice of any kind,it stays covered in the garage. So far this winter,it has been out of the garage 1 time.

You poor, poor, poor snow bunnies...

I drove mine home with the TOP DOWN yesterday morning!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

...they ever mix salt into the sand they occassionally put on our bridges, there'll be BLOOD running in the streets! :)

Hey - if it's a nice day and the roads are dry I'll take it for a ride. This has been a really lousy winter it's only been out only once since early December. My 94 is a driver not a show car, I just don't want to put it away dirty in the strorage unit.

Gee thanks WayneLBurnham. We are in the middle of a storm warning for an expected 18-24" of snow! By the looks of how this winter is going,us 'northeners' might get our cars out for a drive in May sometime!! thanks for making us feel better.I hope it rains on you with your top down.

Dave

I drive my car most days rain, shine or snow...except to day when we are getting 18 to 24 inches of snow....

Nope. I don't drive it in the winter anymore. I did when it was new, because it was more reliable than my daily driver at that time. But now, I don't need to, so it stays in the garage, clean, waxed and under the covers. In about 2 weeks, if we get some break from the cold weather, I'll fire her up. Also, with the number of people I see driving and talking on cell phones, they don't pay proper attention.

If its a nice day, and we have had a rain or 2 to wash the roads, I'll take her out. But when the "salt" is 1/2 inch thick on the roads--no way my vette is going out!! I wrote salt in quotes because the stuff they put on our roads is not sodium chloride salt, it is much more caustic than that and can do much more damage than the salt you find in the ocean.

My baby is warm, dry & clean in the garage right now!!

Anything I can do to help Burglar!

Hey!

Just last night I saw something positively weird!

If you looked up at the streetlights really hard, you could see what looked like styrofoam or maybe some kinda big, white, dust....some floated, some fell straight like sleet almost....

...I have no idea what it was....turned into water when you caught it (I hope it wasn't some kinda terrorist's poison!) :eek

It was bonechilling cold too - maybe under 40, even almost down to where ice can form sometimes....incredible....

Should I worry?

:crazy

wierd white styrofoamish dust

Do you live near an airport? I used to live by the airport, not really close to it but sort of, and i think they spray that stuff around to cut down the fog for the planes, i'm not sure about that though

My vette doesn't come out until Spring. No matter what.

Here in Minnesota, when it gets all the way UP to 40, we're reaching for our swimsuits and tanning oil! ;) ;) ;)

No - although I worked at an airport and have seen that

Never did hear what it was - a pretty small airport for foaming too...

Nah, I'm pretty sure this was "snow" but I had never seen it in person before....

...but I did see it on movies!

:) :) :)

No way will mine be out before spring(shooting for April 15th), expect for 2-3 days the roads have had to be plowed or salted her everyday since before Christmas. You folks in the southern Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia have got more than your share of snow this year, us northerners are used to snow so it is an inconvience, now go up to Canada, in Ottawa it was -25 without the chill factor on saturday. This is the time for the winter carnival there, its a great place to go for a weekend, if you don't mind COLD and SNOW

I love winter but since I bought the Vette I want the best of both worlds, winter stuff but dry to drive my pride and joy, such confussion.

No way will I take it out on winter roads until it has rained enough in the spring to wash off the salt residue. Even if it is dry the salt comes off the roads like dust and gets in everywhere. I'll warm it up completely and drive it up and down the driveway but that's it.

Actually the best winter driving you can do is to drive south or southwest bebore the first snow hits.

Tom

I think that "to drive" or "not to drive" depends on the overall condition of your car. I'm anal about mine because it's been sandblasted and painted under, so it won't see anything but clean pavement. If your under side has dirt or mud, I wouldn't worry about it.
