I hope my terminology is right. On my 61, what holds the wiper pivot rod (the long shaft attached to the wiper arm) in the wiper transmission? The end is splined but I don't see anywhere where a set screw or a snap ring would hold it in place. My driver side one pops out when the wipers are turned on? Can it be easily fixed? Or do I need a new wiper transmission on that side? Looks like a bugger to get it out.

Thanks for any help.

Hi! Dennis

I am a little confused. Are you looking for information on where the female section of the wiper arm attaches to the male splined shaft that pivots back and forth and is connected to the wiper motor through pulleys and cables? If so, there is a small spring clip that seats in the groove on the male post securing the wiper. They make a tool that allows you to release the pressure by prying or pivoting to remove wiper arm. I replaced a missing clip on my 65 from a used wiper arm.

Ray,

I'm referring to the other end of the shaft, not the end the wiper arm goes on. The end that goes into the piece on the underside of the dash. I thought this piece was called the wiper transmissison. It has the cables that wrap around it. Anyway, the end of the shaft that goes into this piece is also splined. I can push it in but it does not stay in. I can actually pull the whole shaft out with the wiper arm still attached to the other end. I hope I've cleared the confusion. I'm a real novice at this stuff. I've got someone helping me, but they do not have a PC to ask the questions.

Dennis,

I look through all my service manuals and I could not find how the bottom part of the transmission is secured. I assume that it was a sub-component purchased by GM and all that I could find was the installation instructions for a complete unit. If you haven't received a response to you question, I am sure John Z could answer it; I would post it on the NCRS site. Someone on that site should be able answer your question.

Sorry,

Ray

I don't know the answer, dennisb, but welcome to :CAC

Thanks. I've been reading the forum for awhile but this is the first occasion I've had to pose a question. So much for beginners luck, eh?

Welcome to the CAC, you're just what we needed...another Dennis!
Someday I'm gonna have to do a DNA test on guys named Dennis to see if there is a Corvette gene.
From one Dennis to another, welcome, again.

Ray, if you haven't already, post this issue over on the C1/C2 Forum at corvetteforum.com; there's a guy over there, "CBernhardt", who knows ALL about C1 wiper transmissions, and has lots of stuff on them on his website. He's another C1/C4 resto-rod owner/builder.

JohnZ,

Thanks. I did post it on the other forum and got a reply from cbernhardt as well as SteveZ. SteveZ included the following web address that had a real good explanation along with pics on rebuilding the wiper transmission on a 59.

Yup, that's Chuck Bernhardt's website - lots of good C1 detail info there you won't find anywhere else; the "Carol" in the website URL is his wife - he built the resto-rod 'Vette for his wife.
