I am having periodic problem with my 77 Corvette. After the car has been running for a some time and it's shut off, the starter will not engage. All other electrical functions work fine. After letting it set for some time (10-30) minutes, it normally fires right up. When the switch is turned on, the car acts like it is not in Park or neutral (indicator lights come on, radio and A/C work, etc.). I have changed the alternator and battery; had the starter checked. A "Corvette Guy" told me that the mid 70's Corvettes had issues with wiring getting hot and cutting out. The issue is intermittent; we have not been able to cause it to repeat when we have any diagnostic equipment available to test it out.

Welcome to the CAC forum.

I suspect the starter since it seems to be a heat related problem. Other possibilty is neutral safety switch might need adjusting.

Starter is warping due to the heat. Do you have headers? Headers make this problem worse. Rebuild the starter and that should solve the problem.

Things that will do this
Old starter, may be on the way out
high heat from aftermarket headers causing it to overheat

also I found on mine there is a harness that runs from the starter back up to the battery... it was corroded and chafed. I replaced that and it did wonders... and yes I have headers....

If you have a battery disconnect , unscrew the top , remove it clean both connecting surfaces, applt a NOOX film. Did that to my 79 and made hot starting much easier ( after a four hour ride and a 10 min pit stop. started right up at normal cranking rate.
