Worn A4 Shifter??

The A4 shifter in my 2000 feels like it is loose and has excessive play, when in gear. The shifter will move about 1/4 to 1/2 inch without it changing gear.
I had the console off earlier this week to fix my dim HVAC display and didn't see anything that was out of place or worn, but then again, I had no clue what to look for.
I did see that there is a plastic ratcheting bar at the rear of the shifter that looks like it could be my culprit. Are there replaceable springs that hold pressure on the ratchet assembley or could it worn teeth or damage?:confused

Honestly, I would disconnect the cable and see if the play is still there.
It very well could be the cable ends.
