well, today is a small milestone in my new wrenching abilities.
yeah, I know for most of you this is no big deal but for me it's a first so I'm pretty happy about it.

Today I just pulled my first motor.

My friend came over with his engine hoist and within 45 minutes or so of him pulling into the driveway we had the hoist unloaded, engine pulled, and on the stand!
The best part is nothing got broken, no fenders were hit, and nobody, especialy me, got hurt! :)

I had already pretty much had everything ready to go, all lines, hoses, motor mount bolts, etc from the motor removed or disconnected, tranny unbolted except for the two top bolts, and the two fuel lines to the fuel pump still needed to get pulled off.
When he got here we decided to just remove the fuel pump from the motor, put my floor jack under the tranny to support it (with a 2x4 to spread the load), hooked up the hoist and lifted her out and got it on the stand.
Man, it went so smooth and easy I can't believe it.

I had the car up on jackstands and had planned on lowering it but it turns out we didn't need to and since we had to pull the motor from the side anyway, having it up on stands made it easier since the legs of the hoist could slide under the front wheel.

I already had most of the parts off the motor anyway but now all the rest of the parts are off. the only thing left is the block with all the internals of course (i'm not rebuilding it, just cleaning and repainting it) and the heads still on it. everything else is off.

well, like I already said, for most, or at least a lot of you guys this is no big deal at all because you have done it countless times but for me it made for a pretty exciting day. :)

Congratulations, Barry. You're making great strides.

(Psssst.............Rob...........I think we're gonna need more hard drive space for this one.) ;)
Bob are you implying that this thread may wind up having more pages than the DaVinci Code?

vette boy, thanks :)

Joe, they are uploading to my website now, give it a little while and I'll post the links

Bob and Gary, now, now be nice! it's not like i asked a question or needed advice how to do something that's going to take 17 pages until I figure it out - this is ALREADY done and finished. I was just mentioning it. I don't see this thread getting too carried away. Rob can save the extra harddrive space for when I actually ask something! ;LOL

Paul, wow, I'm finally one up on you! ;LOL

ok, here are the pics for those remotely interested:

removal
engine out

note, on the removal pics, I'm the dorky looking one actually running the hoist. Trip needs to learn to take better pics when i'm not looking so goofy, although for me they are rare times...... :D

hmmmm, now that I know how to do this......... you can't afford me! ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

darn Bob, I knew as soon as the pics went up you would see the car and move this thread! ;LOL

Nice job. Now with the engine out check the frame and mounts for loose, cracked, bad welds. You can detail the eng bay, check the headlight support, look over the radiator support for rust in the lower corners, rebuild the steering box, etc, etc, etc.
Good luck

Bob, it's ok, i figure you were going to eventually move it anyway. you know I just finished the engine bay in the '65.
i only posted in there originally because those are the guys I know the most and they know my "history' to appreciate what a step this was for me :)

GTR
the engine bay is basically getting a full detailing, the frame forward of the firewall is getting cleaned and repainted along with the front suspension parts.
The radiator, core support and AC evaportator in the front of the radiator are all getting repainted, along with all the parts off the motor.

everything is basically in good condition as the car, a '78, only has less than 9,500 original miles, but it had been neglected so it was in dire need of cosmetic re-doing.
