I need to know what the correct fastener should be to attach the vacumm advance to the distributor on my 1954 235 cu in 6 cylinder. Any photos of the setup would also be greatly appreciated. :w Obviously the present fastener is wrong and not hooked up.

Thanks to Silver Blue 58 (Fred) :w I see that the Vacuum Advance has a stud on the shaft rather than the hole that is on my Advance.
Can anyone tell me if there is a clip or some other type of fastener that holds the two together?

Do you have an AIM? (assembly manual) I am not familiar (memory) on the 54 but I do have resources at my Cary residence. It looks pretty simple. I am currently at my lakehouse (Gaston) but will be back in Cary Friday eve.
I can then try to assist you. If you want I can physically take a look at your issue on Sat.

Fred, thanks for the offer to help. I have ordered a vacuum advance with the correct stud. Hopefully when it arrives that will fix the problem. :w

Your vacuum advance unit was part number 1116076, stamped 076. This part was used on '53-'55 Corvette and '58 passenger cars with 6 cylinder. The part number changed to 1925518 on 11/65. Keep in mind that the newer part number would be a functional service replacement and may not appear the same as the original. The important thing is that it has the same vacuum rating. A weaker spring will allow the vacuum advance to come on too fast and may cause pinging at the correct timing setting. The diaphram spring for 53-54 passenger car was part number 1925529 (1/2" O.D. x 2 1/16" free length x 12 coils). Commercial vehicles and older passenger cars used 1881777( 9/16 O.D. x 2 3/16 free length x 9 coils). The 12 coil spring would be softer.

My March 1954 Chevrolet parts manual shows a shoulder bolt was used in this application up to 1951 and up to 1954 in commercial vehicles. Nothing is listed for 52-54 passenger car or Corvette to connect the arm. It could be that once assembled the arm can't disengage from the stud.

Thanks for your reply Tom. :w I have ordered the correct part and should be getting it in a few days. Then install it and I will be back on the road.

I finally was able to find the correct vacuum advance - thanks Vette Gal.
Sometime in the past the post/stud was drilled out and a poor fit bolt was installed. Now the correct fit has no play and the distributor advance works fine. See correct vacuum advance photo.
I drove the 1954 Corvette to Hendrick Chevrolet in Cary NC on Sunday. They had a Car Show sponsered by Corvette International of Raleigh NC.
There were a lot of great cars in attendence. The officers and members of Corvette International were very professional and offered lots of good advice. There were some other clubs in attendence also. All great people.
I was lucky enough to get a trophy for my class Concours winner and the Dealers Choice Trophy. Lots of metal to carry home.

Glad to hear you got the advance issue fixed. Congratulations on your awards at the Hendrick show...you were right across the street from me...
I have the interior of my 58 torn apart so I did not make it to the show.

Did you get to Henderson? It was mobbed. Great event every year.

Regards,

Fred

Fred:
Thought I might see you at the Hendrick show. :w
Sorry you didn't attend.
My wife and I went to the Henderson Car show. Didn't take the Corvette.
Yes, it was very busy and as always lots of great cars. Walter B. got a Trophy with his blue w/white stripe Corvette. As always a nice car.
Why do you have the interior out of your car? When I saw it at the Raliegh Convention Center it looked great, but then again I didn't get a real close look.

Congrats on the trophys and in getting the car running right. Mary Jo has come through with the right hard to find part for me before too.

Just installing an upgrade radio (repro am/fm/xm/ipod) and inspecting my dashpad and windshield for replacement. Yup Walter was there, great to here he snagged a trophy.
