X Frame must come off to change fuel filter?

I had the Vette in for a little preventative maintanence by changing the fluids (oil,tranny switched to Castrol synthetic,brake and flush and change coolant) before the winter storage and was going to get the fuel filter changed. My guy looked quickly and said that it appeared the X frame underneath had to come off to get at it. And as he was busy, we decided to do it in the spring after the car came out of storage and I change the oil again before hitting the road.

I guess that is the deal with the C4 Convertibles as the big X frame is in the way. Has anyone else encountered this little obstruction before?.....does the X frame really have to come off? Seems like a bit of a hassle to get at the fuel filter there along the side of the car.....

the X-brace is really not that difficult to remove and it makes the fuel filter replacement that much easier. The brace also has to come off for a tranny filter replacement so if that's on the list of maintenance things to do, you might do them both at once. You said you changed the trany fluid but didn't mention anything about the filter.

The nuts and bolts that hold the brace on are not very tight. The nuts are torqued to 20 ft-lb and the bolts on the ends are torqued to 47 ft-lbs.

I did my 91 Vert without removing the X frame. Remove heat sheild and you can do it. Not easy but it can be done. Takes about an 1/2 hour and three beers!!

I love it. 1/2 hour and 3 beers.....so on a four hour job that means you like to sip your way through a two-four I guess ..that's a nice pace. You're my kind of people.....Hey thanks for the tip on the X frame vette-dude.

Hey c4cruiser, maybe I am as dumb as I look:ugh . Because GM said the tranny fluid was good for life, I never thought about changing the tranny filter.....I did it because I read an article in the C4book about 101 things to do on your C4 and he said it was good to change that fluid and upgrade it at the same time to Synthetic. He never mentioned the filter.....I am talking about the 6 speed...are you sure there is a filter and if there is I guess I have to replace all that new fluid again when I change the filter? Wierd he did not mention it in the book.

First thing I did when I bought mine was to change all fluids and filters. The fuel filter on my year did not require removal of the X-frame, but it was a bit of a tight space to work with. On a hoist it was 4 beers and coat change due to the gas all down my sleeve...

Better down the sleeve than in the beer:L . Hey, four beers, so that's about 40 minutes work....way to go Rocket man .

c4 cruiser, there's not a filter in standard trannys, just in the auto's, so I am ok here on just the fluid, but thanks for the input on the X brace etc.
