Since I've finished the chassis repair and suspension rebuild for my 64, it was time to turn my attention to the engine (upgrade from 300hp to 365 configuration). I have known all along that the engine in the car was not the original, as I have the original short block in storage.
I previously assumed that the engine in the car was a replacement shortblock, due to having no numbers on the pad, but the correct (870) casting number. I was cleaning the engine yesterday, when I noticed some numbers stamped onto the front of the block just above and to the drivers side of the timing cover. The numbers are F456887 followed by the number 21 inside a circle. Also stamped in the same area is 060. It is also now evident that the deck was milled at some point since there are no broach marks on the pad and I can clearly see the curved marks left by the milling machine.
Now I'm going to assume that this is a rebuilt .060 over 327 and the numbers are probably from the company that did the rebuild. Good thing I didn't want to bore this thing out any further. I don't plan on removing the heads for this go around since I use no oil and the valve train is tight and works well. Just a new cam & intake this time.
