It’s no secret that the 6.2-liter V-8 engine under the hood of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible is the same engine powering the venerable Corvette. Well, the same engine detuned just a bit.
The Camaro and Corvette convertibles are both bold muscle cars most enthusiasts would be happy to drive home, and the prices of the two are closer than you might think. Look beyond the 2011 Corvette Convertible’s base price of $54,550 and direct your attention to Motor Trend‘s TrueCar pricing guide (available on our homepage).
Motor Trend‘s TrueCar Price Report suggests the average price paid for a base Corvette convertible is $49,271. Compare that with the new-to-market Camaro Convertible and you’ll see the difference of the two 6.2-liter V-8 powered Chevy convertibles isn’t that drastic. Depending on your tastes, if you add enough aesthetic “upgrades” to the Camaro, suddenly the less expensive muscle car is within a few thousand dollars of the Corvette.
Through the end of 2010, Corvette sales were down while Camaro sales were way up — before any convertibles had been delivered. Fuel economy, in case anyone is wondering, falls in the Corvette’s favor: 16/26 mpg city/highway versus the Camaro’s 16/24 mpg, both with manual transmissions.
So what’ll it be? Would you rather stretch your budget and have the appeal of a Corvette convertible or go with a loaded Camaro convertible with an engine modification or two? Tell us what you’d choose and why in the comments section below.
