Many LEOs, in my opinion, have a chip (pun intended

) on their shoulder. I have had my issues with LEOs, but I am very good friends with several of our locals, and find that they are quite alright. But living in a small community (about 2500 here in town and about 4200 in the entire county, 625 square miles) has its' advantages.
I had an incident back when we were first married with a KHP (Kansas Highway Patrol) officer. the wife, our baby daughter and I were heading out of town after church to go get an ice cream in a neighboring town. As I go past the place where our local sits (which was a high school classmate) he's there with this KHP, I wave at Chris as we go by (in our green pickup). The KHP jumps on it and starts following me. I'm minding my own business keeping well under the speed limit. He follows me for 10 miles, finally he pulls me over. His first words were "How much have you been drinking?" "(in a very angry vioce), my response (true at the time), "Sir, I don't drink." "Well, your front left tire hit the centerline twice in the last mile". Please understand, this is western KANSAS and the wind blows....hard and those two times that my tire hits the centerline it was coming out from behind shelter belts, my pickup had very knobby tires that wabdered a bit, so yea they
may have hit the center line...but not over. I say, "Sir, I certainly apologise, I didn't know that." His response was a "Get out" and then I was subjected to the walk the straight line, close your eyes and touch your nose routine. In the end he wrote me up for driving left of center.
The next day I take the morning off work and go in and want to talk to the judge (I'm extremely niave about these matters). The court clerck says the judge can't talk to me about the ticket until I go to court. So I asked what I do and she says plead no contest as it in not an admitance to guilt. So I paid my fine and went back to work. I no sooner get to work when our local, Chris, pulls in and says "Did Hornbaker give you at ticket?" my response was "Yea" (very sarcastically). Chris said "When you went by he asked 'Is that Danny _ _ _?' (We both drove green pickups with toppers) I told him 'No, but he works for Danny', and then he tore out of here following you."
My boss had received a DUI (rightfully I'm sure), then somehow got off on some technicality and they were laying for him. If I'd known about the conversation Chris had before I paid my ticket, I'd have fought it. I lost all respect for KHP officers that day. A few years later this KHP guy ends up as the head of the KHP in Kansas. I lost all respect for our Governor at that point.
Today, I have two very good friends that are KHP officers, and believe (hope) that the corruption has ended (again, sarcsm).
I apologise to our LEOs that are here on CAC, this was an incident that has scarred me for life. And I know that not all LEOs are like that. I thank God that someone wants to do that thankless job, because without them this country would be in shambles.
