I am very interested in a Z06, but I need a vehicle with an automatic transmission so I can install hand controlls because i'm a paraplegic...manual transmission is no good for me. Can a Z06 be converted to auto?
Thanks...

Welcome to the Corvette Action Center. If I'm not mistaken, Mallet Cars has modified Z06s with automatic transmissions for the dragstrip:

You may want to give them a call and see if they could help you out.

If you like C4s there are a couple folks over on the CF that have converted ZR-1s to auto as well.

Another possibility would be to add Z06 features to an A4 coupe. I have a way to go, but every Z06 piece I've added has been an improvement, and the hatch (and opening roof) are extremely handy, especially on road trips. You'll never be quite as light, but for what I would guess is the same money or less than a tranny swap, you could have Z06 heads, exhaust, cam, coolers, airbox, etc.

In any case, welcome in advance to the C5 community.

Just my $.02.

It *could* be done but it would be somewhat expensive. You'd need an entire C5 automatic transaxle assembly, perferably with the 3.15 gears. You'd need an automatic brake pedal. You'd need some wiring harnesses. You'd need to change the calibration.

Know that the automatic is probably not going to be durable behind an LS6 if the car is run hard.

As I said, it could be done but it'd be expensive and time consuming.

Uhhh, folks... this thread started over a year ago and the originator has since quit the CAC. Unless we're talking because we like the subject, he's not listening.

Doh!!

But, yeah, I do like the subject - and I always count a post from Hib as a terrific learning opportunity. :)

Uhhhh, Mac...there was no way for most of us to know that, nevertheless, I do agree that posting to a thread who's originator has left the organizationi doesn't make much sense.

I wasn't trying to heat anyone up; I just found it amusing to see folks offering advice to someone who isn't listening. Kinda reminded me of my upbringing! :L

That being said, I enjoy reading your articles, Hib. I'm very glad & proud to have you associated with the CAC.
