:confused Any thoughts on putting a2001 ZO6 405hp with auto trans in my 81?:eek Can it be done?:Steer :beer :w

I dont see why it couldnt be done, but it would be a job for someone that is very dedicated, determined and patient. It would be bad azz when its done.

One issue, the Z06 was designed and tuned to run with a manual trans. Automatic may have some problems in causing bogging and hesitation without some engine reconfiguration.

tom...

Unless you have access to an LS6 engine, I wouldn't waste your time and money. Pick up an LS1 from a wrecked F-body (Camaro/ Trans am). You can get a nice one with low miles with the automatic that you want for around $3000. You couldn't even come close to an LS6 for that price. Pick up a set of heads and a cam and now you have an engine more powerful than an LS6 and still cheaper.

I can get a 2001 ZO6 with harness and ecm for $2200.00 Still a bad idea?

Just so you know, a 2001 LS6 is only rated at 385 Hp not 405. In 2002 GM went to a larger cam and different programming on the computer. For comparison an LS1 is rated at 350.

Also just so you know, the Corvette version of the engine uses a fly by wire throttle control. You either need to get the complete pedal assembly from a vette or use an F-body throttle body which sounds a whole lot easier than messing with that electronic throttle control.

What are going to use for a transmission?

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. I debated installing an LS6 in mine and opted not to.

2200.00? is that knocking,or spun bearing's? a vette LT1/LT4
goes for 2200.00 to 2500.00. the 2200.00 ZO6 does sound like a
bad idea, or STOLEN. ;LOL :w just my 0000.02

As luck would have it, the new (August) issue of HotRod has an article discussing the replacement of a SBC with and LS6. They're puttig it int oa '67 Chevelle, but the major details should be the same.

From what I recall, they had to rework the motor mounts, replace the throttle body with a cable unit from an F-Body (since, as 70 LS1 points out, the Corvette engine is drive-by-wire), replace the exhaust manifolds, cut up and modify the oil pan (and modify the oil pickup to work with the modded pan), and rework the A/C compressor. They also pointed-out that you would need to use an adapter to mate an automatic transmission that wasn't designed for the LSx blocks (ie, anything other than the 4L65E).

In other words, it can be done, but it's a major project, and will require some skills with custom fabrication/welding/machining.
