I am considering to buy me a ZR-1 upgrade bumper for my 86 coupe

I can buy a 91-96 bumper at the local corvette shop but they have the wide molding.

I found the item I am looking for at MA but I think it is quite expensive.
item 600-954 $499.99
and completion kit is required 600-956 $ 229.99

does anyone have an adress where these are sold for lower price ?
or does anyone have a good solution to fit the (widemoldings bumper) with old type moldings

used or with minor repair also welcome.

A ZR-1 bumper will not fit a reg. Vette, its 3 inches wider you would have to change rear Qs, doors and rockers….But some of the venders sell a look a like Z bumper that will bolt on. Look for one that is a 90 style as it has the same molding as yours.

I know that,

that's why I referred to the MA product ZR-1 upgrade bumper for 84-90 models

though it crossed my mind to for wider quarter panels but then I have to buy me the wheels too.

Cool..You may want to check into the molding on the MM bumper if they are add on you could use yours..on the real thing they are, but on 91 up reg bumpers from GM they are molded in.

on the original Zr-1 bumpers they were never molded.

on MA they are 84-90 style pre-molded
at Ecklers they are sold separately together with the lights.

correct..on the org ZR-1 they were not molded on...

Just checked MM has both...84-90 & 91-96....

I red that moldings are already in.

The ZR-1 Style Rear Bumper transforms your 1984-90 Corvette into the style of a 1991-96 by replacing your existing rear bumper with a fiberglass replica of the ZR-1 styled bumper. Add the bumper completion kit (sold below) for the square tail lamps. Bumper is gel-coated, ready for custom fitting and installation. Fits all 1984-90 non ZR-1 Corvettes. Bumper has 1984-90 moldings already molded in for your convenience plus money savings. Paint body color or black. Ships truck freight, please call for a quote.
GM ZR-1 Bumper Completion Kit
includes square tail lamp assemblies (4 housings, lenses, and gaskets), and mounting hardware.

the version that Ecklers sells is without moldings.

but i thought any rear bumper off a later model C-4 1991 to 1996 (not ZR-1)was the same length as the earier C-4s.. i thought just the ZR-1 bumpers were the 3 inches wider. so could he buy used bumpers from a wrecking yards and mount it with no problems but still need the wide moldings.

Rebuild an '89 in the past with '92 bumpers.. no problems what so ever. Or I was lucky or it should be possible to just use later model's bumper's on you earlier one.

Best regards,

Wouldn't he not be able to use his trim molding no matter what? The new bumper will be a totally different shape from the one his trim comes off of.

I don't know much about it, but I can't imagine there's a huge market for those things, so they might be sort of costly. If you went with a real one, you'd need the doors too, FYI. I think the real ZR-1 rear might be harder to find and costlier.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to do this? It seems like a lot of cost and trouble for only a mild appearance change with no performance enhancement?

Edit: I'd guess if you painted the molded-in trim on the bumper with black paint, it would never look right or match the real black plastic trim it butts up against. The trim has a sort of rough finish that might be hard to replicate painting a smooth surface.

Just for looks :D

I am forced to re-paint the car cause the black has faded.
and while I am add it why not replacing the stock bumper for the ZR-1 upgrade.

the reason I do not want a normal 91-96 is that they have a different molding stripe.
