Are they lipped or oringed. They are Delco calipers. How do I tell the difference.

All 65-82 vette calipers were lip seal type. O-rings are an aftermarket design used in vendor calipers. You won't know unless you open up the caliper to check.

they are open just not sure what I am looking for. They are delco. with aluminum pistons. Other than that not sure but leaning towards o-ring

Finally found out which it is.

It is a lip seal, or cup seal or square seal! :happyanim:

The lip seal pistons are different from the o-ring pistons, so you can't mix the two systems. A o-ring seal installed on a lip seal piston will not fit the caliper bore. A lip seal on a o-ring piston won't seal against the caliper bore. There's a reason I and Vette Brakes know this.....

G'day Oldman32,
Just thought I'd chime in with some info that no-one else seems to have given. In your sons previous intro thread you mentioned that the brakes had been previously rebuilt, but now the peddle was travelling to the floor.
Well this is very common with C3's, that still have the original brake piston seal system (lip seals), that have been left sitting around for an extended period of time with out use (the seals deteriorate). The 'o' ring seal
system was developed to combat this problem. So if you are not going to have the car back on the road for some time to come, it may well be worth while considering this seal upgrade.

Hope this helps.

1981 Corvette

1981 Corvette has been sitting for years and brake pedal goes to floor. No sign of leakage from calipers. Would the master cylinder need rebuilding for the first plan of action? 44,000 miles and sitting for about 10 years.

is the master empty???
you could bleed the system and you should be able to tell whether or not it leaks,
and go from there.:thumb
