2004 needs new clutch

I have 13,000 miles on my wifes 04 and the chevy dealer says no warranty cause the clutch is worn out. The car has not been raced or for that fact not even driven hard.
We have never had a clutch wear out that fast. Is this a common problem on 04's and what clutch would you recommend
 
Yikes ...hope it is not a common problem...I have 12K on mine now!

I have almost 15K miles on my 2004 and the clutch is fine. I would think a clutch should be good for at least 50k to 60k unless you push it hard.

I've seen clutches go well over 100,000 miles!!!! I have a 03 vert 44,000 miles on the lot and a 03 Z51 (my Personal) with almost 39,000 and there is not any problems with the clutch in either!!:upthumbs
 
Doesn't sound right to me.I've driven std since I was in 3rd grade .Clutch should go for at least 90,000 miles ave driving on a c-5.
Not to be rude I assume that your wife has driven std for years.It has to be a defect or your wife.And if it was my wife I sure as hell wouldn't tell her she did it.
 
I have about 45,000 miles on my Z06. I routinely drag race and autocross it. The clutch is still fine.

Or maybe the dealer is trying to make a quick profit from an unsuspecting owner. :mad

We have an '02 with 25k miles...the clutch is just fine. I've driven stick shifts all my life (and I ain't telling you long that is! ;LOL ), and I've never replaced a clutch. My bet is that your wife "rides the clutch".

Wife is a good driver

And I am not just saying that because she reads the forum also.

I had the car towed from the dealer to Aamaco and they did nothing more than take the cap off the master cylinder and pump the pedal a couple times and it works fine.
I should have tried that myself and probably would have if it weren't under warranty.
But When the chevy dealer at the avenues in Jacksonville told me it would cost me $500 to drop the tranny just to find the problem and it would be $1980 to replace the clutch if it was worn I decided to have someone else look at it.

My analysis is there is a problem some where because the clutch hydraulic system is a sealed system, and it should not be able to get air in it, just hope I can find it and get it fixed before the warranty runs out.

OH yea I will be going to a diffeerent dealer next time

As far as I'm concerned you get points, :chuckle but like the rest of you guys I will have to check with my wife.
As far as the leak goes, I can't find one anywhere. Everything is bone dry that I can get to and the resovoir is full.
But I am sure sooner or later it will show up. It must be inside the bell housing and be very small as of yet

I'm glad you got someone else to look at your Vette and fix the problem without spending that much cash. I know if I told my wife that she burned out the clutch and it was her fault, I'd be sleeping under the car for a long time:L

I don't live in Florida but for those that due can you tell us who was the dealer. I don't wont you to flame any dealer, it's just that the next guy that goes there and gets a ridicules quote, he might wish to get a another opinion.

P/S - a disclaimer just for my wife who also reads this forum:

I am not sure if we are allowed to post any bad comments about dealers here but I can say that I wouldn't go to the Avenues area on Phillips Hwy to get my corvette fixed.

I spoke with the dealer about the situation after Aamco got it working and they said that it wasn't possible to get air in the system because it was a sealed system and even if it were possible you couldn't bleed the air out , again because it is a sealewd system.

Their estimate to fix the clutch was over $800 for a clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Any additional parts would be extra.
Ecklers has a Luk original equipment clutch package (clutch, pressure plate, throw bearing, pilot bearing, and fly wheel for a little over $400.
The chevy dealer said 12.5 hours of labor and Aamco siad 6.5 hours labor.

What is a fellow to do when you have warranty work? It seems most of the dealers operate the same.
If anyone in Jax knows of an honest dealer let me know

Mike, I just had the clutch in my C5 replaced (LS7 clutch) so let me tell you that the dealer's quote for hours is more accurate than Aamco's. There is no way I'd let Aamco work on my Vette. They don't seem to realize the details in changing the clutch in the C5, the fact that the entire rear transaxle of the car needs to come out. Special care needs to be taken to make sure that the transaxle is lined up correctly when putting the car back together. If you are having problems with this particular dealer then look for others. I'm sure with the number of Corvettes in the Jax area that there is a good specialist that everyone trusts.

If you want to drive a couple hours, head down to Melbourne and go to the Vette Doctor. I'll send you a PM with more info if you're interested.

I know on hard shifts at times the clutch pedal can feel spongy but it recovers back to a normal state pretty quickly. I had both my master and slave cylinder replaced as well as my clutch and pressure plate. I haven't gotten a lot of miles on it since the clutch so I'm unsure if the new cylinders have solved my spongy pedal feel.

I would be interested in the info on the vette doctor. Besides the clutch problem, which btw is not giving me any problems since Aamco fixed it, I want to get a good tune-up and reprogram since it has long tube headers, cat back exhaust no catalytic conveerters and a cold ait intake added to it. The chevy dealers says that is the only way to get the service engine light to stay off. I have been unable to find anyone any good in Jax to work on my '86 (I've been looking for almost 2 years) so I doubt I will find anyone for the '04.

Could you tell me how much nyour new clutch cost you?
