When adjusting the engine timing on an automatic:

6BTDC, idle 500 in drive. Is their any hoses to plug, or just adjust?

My idle speed in drive is around 800; and the engine idles abnomally with a rich gasoline odor. Could timing cause this?

TNA,
Hans

The timing is adjusted with the 4 pin harness from the dizzy to the computer unplugged. You can also adjust the idle speed on the carb.

Also, the conditions described in your Vette's Smog Label apply.

Big2bird, and GerryLP, Thank you for responce.

Disconneted harness, adjusted idle on carb....Timing is right on @6BTDC. The only code coming from the compter is code 12 and no other codes. Some of my emission equitment is missing, Air pump not hooked up, no cat, and no emission label. Wonding if the computer is not controlling the idle mixture, making the car runs rich? How can I check this? Once againTHANK YOU for your help.......

Without looking it up I can't remember what code 12 is. There are some basic setup adjustments for the carb. You need a shop manual for that year vette, there is a step by step for each of the codes in the book.
Without knowing the history on your car you can't know what the deal is.
I would to thru the basic adjustments so you know what they are, then start troubleshooting.
The idle mix screws should be 4 1/2 turns out from lightly seated to start. The Lean Bleed air mix screw is 3 1/2 turns out from lightly seated to start.
The MC solenoid should be at 1.305" from the jet seat (there is a gauge for this, you need it.)
The MC travel is 3/16"
Jeff did a good thread on all this in the other Forum, he will chime in with details

Sixfooter knows this carb. The idle mixture screws IAW the AC Delco SD-100A...Engine code 6 and Q-Jet 17081217/17081218 = 3 3/4 turns; 17081224/17081228 = 3 1/2 turns

The manual will tell you to check your idle mixture screws if for some reason or other you can't get close to 30 Deg at the 6 Cylinder scale of the Dwell.

Code 12 is computer operating normally. Ideally, all you want to see is code 12.

Some how, I ended up with a Calf carb 17081218 on my 350CID.... Can not make any adjustment on the carb until I remove the plugs for the adjustment screws.... Thank you for the adjustment spec.... I know the computer is giving a code 12 but, I have a hard time believing all is well with the CCC.... I have heard if the computer is not working correctly, the carb goes in to loop making it rich..... Is that correct, and how do you test the computer, making sure it's working correctly?

Thanks for you help, and support,
Hans

Close. When the system fails, the system goes into "open" loop. And yes, it runs rich. It is designed to default to a setting drivable to the dealership. When the system "fails", the check engine light comes on, and sets a memory code. Check your lamp. Does it come on when starting up?

Yes, the engine check lamp comes on, and goes off when the moter starts, maybe the computer is working....I did a compression test this weekend and found that all cyl were the same....160...that's good news......Also found a few spark plug wires bad, and I'm in the process of changing all of them....Any other spark plug shields around the plugs, other than the one on the front pass side?

Thank You, Hans
