Whats up guys. I have an 85 vette and have found a 98 vette I am thinking about checking into is there anything in paticular I need to check out mechanical or otherwise? What are the horsepower and torque ratings? How much better is the 98 compared to the 85? I appreciate the help!
First, here's a link to the

The '98 has an LS1 engine. Horsepower is rated at 345 bhp @ 5600 rpm. Torque is 350 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm.
While I don't mean to slight the C4, the '98 is more Corvette for the money. The handling doesn't feel as tight as a C4 but the ride is much more refined. It's easier to get in and out of the C5.
Check this thread for several links of interest to C5 owners:

Be aware there was a recall on the Column Lock, you'll want to ensure it was done. Also, early C5s had an issue with battery leakage... look for any signs of leakage around or under the battery.
Given that the '98 is nearly 12 years old, the Column Lock and battery issues were likely addressed long ago but it doesn't hurt to read up on it and doublecheck.
In the thread mentioned above, there's a link to a more detailed thread on pulling codes on a C5. You'll want to do that, then bring them here so we can discuss and advise you on any that show up.
As with any 12 year old car, it's definitely a case of Buyer Beware! But the '98 is a great Corvette - I love mine and other than learning about the battery leakage issue the hard way, I've enjoyed it immensely! Most everything else I've had to deal with has been normal upkeep as parts wearout/fail.
Good luck!
