I had the same problem with the SYS light flashing on my 96 and the fix was to replace a bad positive battery cable. I haven't had any problems since then.

Try Acetone. Alot of people have had good luck using this in moderation. Soak paper towels or rags in Acetone and lay on the area that you want to strip. Work in small areas only. Should get most of the paint off.
Node light should be off with the ignition on and engine not running. With engine running, node like will flicker on and off, very quick flashes as the injector wiring harness receives its signal from the ECM.
