I totally agree with Tom's thoughtful and comprehensive response. The car may not be the total basket case that others seem to think it is, especially if it has been stored inside and not exposed to the elements causing water intrusion to interior and/or engine compartment. Hopefully the...
I can't help but wondering why you would leave the car just sit and idle for 20-30 minutes. Engine compartment heat with the car sitting still will surely build up. Have you tried it with the hood both open and closed to see if it makes any difference? Personally, I wouldn't let it sit just...
I'm going to say a few things that you don't want to hear. A C3 for a first car will be a challenge. Unless you have mechanical skills and tools, you'll need deep pockets to pay someone to repair and maintain a 40 +/- year old car. Many if not most of us with C3's have them as a second car or...
The first thought that comes to mind is vapor lock. You might try to insulate the engine compartment fuel line. I'm sure others will chime in with different ideas.
As far as the choke light, no clue except that the engine is warm but the choke thinks it's needed to facilitate startup?
Overheating
Have you checked behind the air dam and/or at the bottom of the radiator for any trash that could have been picked up from the road which might be affecting air flow such as leaves, plastic bags, etc?
wheel bearings
Have you disassembled and visually inspected the bearings and races before deciding to replace? If there is no discoloration due to heat and no pitting or wear marks on the races or bearings, there probably is no need to replace. I would just do a good cleaning and repacking...
There should be a threaded hole at the front of the block in front of and 90 degrees to the fuel pump pushrod. Next time, remove the bolt from the hole and replace it with a longer bolt finger tight to hold the pushrod in the upper position. Install the fuel pump and don't forget to remove the...
You have been given very good advice Also you could try to look for rust and/or bubbling issues all around the windshield frame from the inside and the outside. If the owner will let you, remove the side kick panels below the ends of the dash and check for rust at the #2 body mounts. Surface...
upgrades
The items you mentioned will help with power increase, especially if they are properly selected. Instead of a cam change you might consider roller rocker arms and/or 1.6 rockers which would give a slight increase in valve lift.
trans filter
Besides the bolt holes lining up you have to make sure that the outlet from the filter lines up with the fluid port feeding the trans itself.
