    Carburator base plate replacement

You're not going to find a new baseplate - you have to rebuild what you have or swap it out for another used one. If you send the carb or the baseplate to me, I can do the setup for you. Lars

    Question: Mechnical Flat Tappet Rebuild

You pull the rocker arms off first, as stated in my post - you can't pull the springs off with the rocker arms in place... No valves are open, so you let the engine rotate from the air pressure - there is no reason or point in preventing it from rotating to BDC. You don't need any more...

    Question: Mechnical Flat Tappet Rebuild

Yes, it's easy. Just buy a valve spring compressor tool from Summit like these: Moroso 62370 - Moroso Stud Mount Valve Spring Compressors - Overview - SummitRacing.com or Proform Parts 66784 - Proform Valve Spring Compressors - Overview - SummitRacing.com Along with an air hose like this...

    Question: Mechnical Flat Tappet Rebuild

Any oil or antifreeze in the cylinders following a teardown will burn out within 5 minutes of operation. Head gaskets won't cause oil smoke, and modern head gaskets do not need to be re-torqued. Unless, of course, the smoke is water vapor and not oil... Why don't you just do a cylinder leakdown...

    Question: Mechnical Flat Tappet Rebuild

I've had several cases of bad PC seals, causing oil smoke with new heads. If I were you, I'd simply replace all the seals with good quality PC seals - even if your seals are new. In my 35 years of building engines, I've never seen a top end rebuild "blow out" the rings on an engine - that's a...

    Rear fiberglass fender

The stock rear bumper facia was urethane - not fiberglass. ACI offers a Flexible Rear Bumper facia very similar to the original, and the 1975 versions are available with or without the "corvette" letter indentations. Both versions retail for $399.99. 1-piece fiberglass (hard) rear bumper facias...

Synthetic Gear Lube in Muncie 4 speed Transmissions

I've been running Red Line synthetic in my GTOs and Vettes for 20 years, and the GTOs have seen hard usage as weekend bracket racers. The shifting is smoother, and I haven't lost a synchro since switching over. Lars

    Stock SB manifold question.

You can increase this effect significantly by installing the thick (1/4") open-plenum carb base gasket. By playing with the thick open-plenum gasket versus a closed 4-hole gasket, you can "tune" your intake setup and tailor the torque curve a little. Lars

    Stock SB manifold question.

By connecting the upper and lower planes of a dual plane manifold with a slot like this, the engine effectively "sees" a larger manifold inlet plenum. This produces a slight increase in midrange and top end power due to opposing cylinder banks being able to share some plenum volume - the effect...

New Dyno Results: Re-Test of the 383!

Cam specs were posted in the previous thread - link provided in the first sentence in the first post in this thread. It's a very mild cam (224/230 @ .050), and the engine will idle at 700 rpm. Hydraulic rollers aren't going to rev over 5800, so the engine was built to produce good torque and...

where to find allen head half shaft bolts?

McMaster-Carr# The actual name for them is "socket head cap screws." Do a search at McMaster under that heading and you will find every "allen head" bolt size you can imagine. Lars

What is your thought on this Essential C3 Tool KIt?

Ken - I think you've done a great job on the kit - very cool. I think your target market is as a gift item and as a "nice touch" novelty item for someone's car. I don't know anyone with a C2 or C3 that actually carries any tools in the car out of neccessity: Any on-road failures with these cars...

Need Help & Opinions on Engine Swap

I’m wanting to upgrade my ’64 Vette to be more like a European Sports Car, and what better way to do that than to install a 4-cylinder engine! The 496-horse engine is just too much, and flaunts the American excess that the World hates us for. We should be more sensitive to other Nations’...

    Choke sticks open on Q-Jet

Hey Pete - You have something funny going on in the third photo in your original post.. The choke is open, yet the choke rod from the choke coil is not pushing up on the attach point - there is an air gap above the rod in the hole - the rod should be pushing up and eliminating the gap. The...

    Choke sticks open on Q-Jet

Pete - I'm on dial-up, so I can't see the video. If there is any problem at all with the carb, or any indication of a problem, just send it back to me and I'll run it, test it and fix it - all my carbs have a lifetime warranty and service agreement to test and tweak any time you need it. Let me...

    Choke sticks open on Q-Jet

Hib is correct: Once the throttle is cracked open, the choke should be completely free to rotate and move with no restriction. If the choke is not immediately snapping closed when cold, there is some mechnical contraint or binding in the linkage system. This could be in the choke coil (on the...

Question: What can cause a cylinder misfire

A leakdown test positively identifies if there is a cylinder leakage issue, regardless of cam duration and other variables that can affect cranking pressure. The leakdown test also quantifies the quality of the compression, and positively identifies where any issues are located (intake, exhaust...

Question: What can cause a cylinder misfire

Nope. 160-180 pounds of cranking pressure won't cause a misfire - not a chance. You don't get a misfire until cranking pressure drops down into the 60-90 psi range. Although you have 2 cylinders that appear slightly lower than the others (you're still within 10%), your misfire is not caused...
