    86 Rear wheel bearings/hubs

A lot of the vibration at high speed that you can't seem to get rid of turns out to be bad u-joints. U-joints are easy to do while you are in there. Best way to check those wheel bearings is with a dial indicator by the proceedure in the shop manual. As I remember they should be less than...

    Front Rotors on 88

unbolt the caliper brackets, if they don't come off they are rusted on. smack them a few times with a hammer, if they won't come off get out a propane tourch and heat them up around the studs and they will loosen up. js

    Radiator replacement

There are some issues concerning getting all the air out of a LT-1/4 car I don't know what they are. I got 15 years out of my radiator before the stress cracks showed up around the transmission cooler inlets. Those radiators aren't steel, they can be cracked it they are yanked on to hard or...

    Pirelli Tires

SZ50!! If you are cheap and poor, Kumho. Check out tirerack for sure, even if you don't buy from them you know the down home price. The sets I have ordered get from them to GA in 3 days. Shipping is less than sales tax. JS

    Serious Brake problems

If it goes away when things warm up it sounds like it's the brake pad compound. Will the brakes come up if you make a few quick hard stops before the engine warms all the way up? If it does that's a sure test to see if it's the pads. JS

"96 CE Following ruts badly on highway, has 80K on odometer, whats the fix?

When a C4 starts getting bad on ruted roads look at the wheel bearings tierod ends and tires. The only to really check the wheel bearings is with a dial indicator. If the end play is over .006 (as I remember, look at the shop manual) it will be all over the road. 80k miles is about how long it...

    z51 vs z52

There is a code on the bottom of the rack in addition to the number of turns to identify the racks. Z-51 and Z-52 have the fast ratio @2 1/4 turns 84-87 interchange. 88 and up there are some differences in ratios along the way, I don't know what they are. Don't get a cheap rebuilt rack. Make...

    4th Alternator in 2 months????

My 87 has had 4 alternators in the 9 years I've had it. You can bet a weak battery will eat an alternator. A $75 alt is a cheap one. I know a lot of people will slam Pep Boys but I bought a lifetime alt from them in 95 and they have made it good 3 times. The first one lasted 2 or 3 years and...

Fuel Pump dying, how long to live???

Do you know you don't have a leaking injector? Most of the orginal pumps will last at least 100k miles. I let the one in my 87 die on me it lasted 215K miles. When it quit I got about 3 miles notice, a little sputtering. When I ripped it apart it had worn the communtator down until one of the...

    Brake fluid reservoirs

Start looking for a master cylinder. Fluid is not supposed to pump between the 2 sections. You can get repair kits, sometimes that will fix them. It just depends on if the bore is pitted badly. Aluminum gets water traped against it and really rots out in there. Take it apart and look at it...

    '84-'87 Brake Conversion

I'm headed that way. I have not seen it with my own eyes but here goes on what I have read: The J55 13"brakes will fit only in the 9.5 inch enkei wheels. This is supposed to be the setup used on the 80's showroom stock cars. Pictures show the calipers BARELY clear the wheels to the point where...

found problem, still need help, engine specs

you're right, sounds like your IAC is out of wack. sometimes the pintle doesn't get repositioned like it's supposed to I think there is a proceedure in the shop manual to get it right. As many mods as you have you might need to get your prom worked on. JS

    Idle problem 1991 automactic

You can get compression test done now days without even pulling out the plugs with the right test equipment. They disconnect the ingition system and watch the current draw pulses on the starter. It doesn't show psi but it does show a relative value. It could be igintion, some HEI rotors will...

    Caliper Brackets/Adapters for 87

Baer sent me a note, they have the brackets from their Track kit (J55 with BAER caliper) that are one piece for $85 each. For 85-87 cars this is a custom bracket and doesn't use any adapter. This is what is on Ken's car. There is a front set of GrandSport brakes for $250 on ebay. I think I'm...

    1984 Antenna Grommet removal

yea they did. you would fall over if you took it to dealer and wanted it fixed!!! Last i seen anyone ask all they want to do is replaced the entire antenna. When you find where the coax breaks do like they said tie a string or or something on the wires and pop the gromet out from the inside...

    Disk Warping

I'd change the brake hose on that right side next. Brother-in-law's 95 Surban had a nagging brake problem he couldn't figure out until somone suggested the hose. It was really bad inside, fluid wouldn't hardly go through it without the power brake pumped up. New hoses made the brakes better...

    Caliper Brackets/Adapters for 87

I need some info: Does anyone besides Douge Rippie sell adapters to mount J55 brakes on early C4's? Are the brackets with the Baer Track kit custom made one piece? If there is a custom bracket, anyone seen them sold seperately and an idea about price? I know, get A-mold wheels and upgrade to...

    U Joint replacement

A lot of clunk is just loosness in the carrier. It you have vibration you can't get rid of at high speed you can bet you need new u-joints in the half-shafts. The u-joints in the drive shaft don't move since they are inside the C-beam. I changed the ones in my 200k mile 87 and couldn't see...

    C-4 Brake Upgrade

The late C4 13" brakes, ie J55, ZR-1 will BARELY fit under the Einke 16X9.5 wheels. I have not seen them in person but I've seen pictures posted. Rocks and road debris had scratched the inside of the wheel, the clearance was just enough not to scrape. Recently someone did the upgrade and...
