I know its a different year and engine, but double check your fuel pressure. After my rebuild, it wouldnt start,only to find out that the pump went bad sitting there. Same symptoms, backfires, wants to run but doesnt. Good luck!

Thanks Vette and BadDuck..I forgot to mention that the stage II chip now controls the fans alot earlier, I believe. My only concern was that the pigtail connector/wire needs to be bent in a 90 degree angle so its not hitting the header tube, even then , lesss than a 32nd of an inch clearance...

On my C4, I also found a braided ground wire from the rear of the right side head to the frame! Not sure if its supposed to be there, but thats where I found one!

They are the stock units...when I got the car, the engine was awash in oil, grease p/s fluid. I cleaned the runners and plenum the best I could, but it still looked like stained aluminum. So I tried high heat red on the runners and high heat black on the plenum.
