    Transaxles

Thanks, guys. So far, the ZF looks most promising. Anyone know where I can get specs (dimensions, torque ratings, etc.) for ZF transaxles (either the older ones, like in the Pantera, or the modern units)? Their website is less than helpful... Joe

    Transaxles

Here's an odd one... Can anyone name a transaxle that can take hefty amounts of torque, and has the differential at the front? Joe

    A/C for an intercooler?

Well, I can't see that it would be any heavier than a typical air-water-air setup. The theory is that you are really only generating significant compression heat during short portions of your drive, so the resevoir provides plenty of heat sink for those times. I'm curious if anyone has...

    What's the deal with signatures?

I dunno what the deal is, but it may be fixed... my sig appears now, in any forum I've tried. Joe

    What's the deal with signatures?

Sometimes my signature appears at the bottom of my posts. Sometimes it doesn't. What gives? Obviously, it has to do with the box being checked or not, but why do some forums default to showing it and others to not showing it? Joe

    A/C for an intercooler?

I was browsing around randomly, and decided to check out the "other forum." I came across an interesting topic by one member. He used a water/air intercooler, and hooked the lines to a resevoir in the back (pretty standard stuff, up to this point). Instead of filling the resevoir with ice for...

Wanted: willing to trade for a C4 convertible

I'm looking to sell/trade my '87 Buick Grand National. I'd like to get a C4 convertible. Preferrable later in the generation ('95 or '96 area), but I'm open to other ideas. Actually, I'd even trade for a coupe, if it was interesting (ie, already modified) enough... See the description in the...

Thinking of buying a C4 vert...

Thinking of buying a C4 vert...

Much as I'd hate to part with them, I'm seriously considering selling my '79 and my Buick Grand National, and buying a C4... I'd like to have a more "turn key" car than the Shark, and a more practical car than the GN ($300 for new rear tires every 3000 miles wears thin...) I'd also like to get...

Puff of smoke (electrical)... now car won't start

Unless someone has done some customizing on your car, the headlight actuators are vacuum-operated, not electric. So that means checking for proper vacuum signals. I'm sure someone could walk you through it. Joe

Puff of smoke (electrical)... now car won't start

It may be a fusible link, which is basically a piece of wire that melts at a predictable load. It serves the same purpose as a fuse, but it is harder to replace. I believe the idea is to encourange people to take the car back to the dealer or a mechanic for service. I'm not certain about your...

    Should I get a ZR-1?

So, anyone want to trade? ;) Seriously, I think this might be a very good idea. I'd have better performance, and an even rarer car than the Grand National, while still having a Corvette. I just need to find someone with a nice ZR-1 who really wants a C3 project car and a fast Buick... :) Joe

    Should I get a ZR-1?

I was considering selling one of my cars, and someone suggested the idea of selling both and getting a ZR-1. So, what do you guys think? Am I going to be able to find a ZR-1 in respectable condition for high teens to low twenties? I'm not looking for a show car, but a reliable car to drive on...

    Electric Water Pumps

Alright, guys... Here's some physics... Fans, water pumps, etc. operate most efficiently in some particular (and narrow) rpm band. When driven too slowly, they don't produce the desired flow rate, so you have to have them producing enough flow, at or near idle. That means that they are being...

    Need to change ALTERNATOR BELT

Hmmm... I've seen a lot of dented PS pumps, where people used pry bars for tensioning. I haven't actually tried to tension mine, yet, so I guess I'll have to give it a shot by hand, first. Joe

    Edelbrock manifold/Stock Hood??

The Vanacor stinger hood provides about 1 3/4" extra clearance. I would assume that the Eckler's stinger is similar in size. Something I've seen that seemed interesting, but I have never personally tried, is this. I was thinking that some of the clearance issues on some car/intake...

    Need to change ALTERNATOR BELT

Quick way to get the right size replacement belts... Take your old ones with you to the store. That way you can make sure that the belts they hand you will actually work, without having to stick them on the car, only to find out that they are too loose or too tight... While we're at it...

Do I need a parking brake?

Using the parking brake also takes stress off the transmission, u-joints (all six), and rear end, particularly when parking on a hill. Of course, on the other hand, if you live in certain areas, corrosion and/or ice can cause your parking brake to stick in the "on" position, rendering your car...
