Well, it finally happened to me. I parked my Z06 and went into a store. When I came back out, my steering would not unlock. Brutus was hauled away on a flatbed and got the recall treatment to fix the column. It works fine now.

If the block is not original, but the stamping numbers are consistent with the manufacture of the car (as explained by c5vetter), and the components are what the car was built with, then it is not a "counterfeit". That is what a restoration often requires- a hunt for correct, but not original...
I think that the older "gross" HP ratings were as measured with an engine on a stand with no accessories attached and tuned for maximum horsepower. Power was measured "at the flywheel". The newer "net" HP ratings are also measure on a stand at the flywheel, but all the pumps, alternator, etc...
If the fuel was converted to motion more efficiently and less was lost as heat, then we could improve both the emissions and the CO2 production. I thoght that something like 90% of the gasoline's potential energy is converted to heat. If that was cut to 70%, or 50%, we could use much less fuel...
