My only concern would be that the window is no longer supported along the entire edge where it sits on the vehicle - only by the latch that is attached to the 'gadget' - would that single point put more stress on the glass and possible cause it to break due to extra flexing and bouncing?

To answer my own question - I finally got a T-30 bit to fit the screws and removed the air bag. In addition to disconnecting the battery, I also pulled the airbag fuse.

I've had similar problems over the years with my '90. Sometimes I temporarily lose control of the temperature (as you have done) - other times it's the fan speeds - or perhaps the auto button refuses to work. If I wait a bit (hours or days), I eventually regain control (until the next time)...
