Question: 1981 Fuel Line from Pump to Carb

I did it a few years ago, And I am not near my car or I would look for you. but I am almost positive I had to take the AC bracket off to make it fit. It is a bit of a PIA to snake down there, and almost always a PIA to get the nut to align properly with the fuel pump.

    Question: Vacuum leaks

I agree that the ECM does not monitor any of the smog stuff, it does turn on the EGR valve and I think it controls the air diverted, but has no feedback from any of the smog stuff. It seems like you have done a good job in sealing all the vacuum leaks, which is time well spent, but it still...

Chirping from engine area 1981 Auto in reverse under load

I have owned my 81 for over 30 years and it has always "squealed" when driven in reverse. I have heard others describe the same thing. Hasn't bothered anything else in all these years, so I just consider it one of the many little idiosyncrasies of the beast

    check engine light stays on

The 1981 is the first computer controlled corvette. ECM is the Electonic Control Module, or simply the computer it is located in the battery compartment behind The driver seat. It will be on the front wall of the battery compartment. It is a silver box about 6" x 8" x 3" with two...

    check engine light stays on

Do you know if the ECM is still in the car? That is very strange behavior. If you do have an ECM, do you know how to read codes? If so, are there any codes? If not let me know and I will tell you how.

Question: any advice would be appreciated

Well, It is a 34 year old car, made when the quality of american cars had a lot to be desired!. So it will probably leak, drip, ooze, smoke, smell, shutter vibrate, rattle, and be too noisy to have a normal conversation -- GOD I LOVE THAT CAR!!!!!:happyanim: Seriously, change the fluids...

    Question: 1981 C3 Corvette questions

You seem to be curious if you will HURT the value of the car by painting it. I would not think so. The 1981 corvette is not very collectible now, and probably not in the foreseeable future. Right now I do not see the plastic bumper corvettes ever commanding the prices of their chrome...

Help! OK...did I do something wrong or was it Murphy's law?

The hinges on the seats have an inertial" switch" that stops the seat collapsing forward in a crash. It is a simple pendulum that locks the seat from moving forward. I assume yours is a little sticky and got stuck when putting the cover back on and then freed up again. Some wd40 will...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Remember that the dwell only fine tunes the idle mixture. I would not expect it to cause such a change in mileage. Again, that mileage is saying the carb is full rich at all time. I bet there is black smoke coming from the tailpipes when you accelerate. Have your wife follow you. If so...

Need to change TPS on my 81

It is fairly straight forward. Are you comfortable opening up your carb. It could be done with the carb on the car, but I would suggest taking it off. There are a lot of detailed instructions around on how to dissasemble a QJET, but I will outline what you need to do -- this is from memory...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

That mileage is exactly what I expect if the ECM goes open loop (17mpg Closed loop, 7mpg open loop). This may be obvious, but is the car throwing any codes. If there are no codes, is the ECM working -- can you get code 12 when you jumper the test leads?

    Loose hanging wires.....

The solenoid doesn't actually increase the idle, it actually just doesn't let it return to normal. So if the ac is active and the throttle is open the plunger is extended and when the throttle closes, it " rests on the solenoid". It is adjusted by turning the bolt

Help! White smoke from air cleaner!

As far as I know, the 81 ECM only controls the idle mixture. NOT the idle speed. That is still controlled by the idle speed screw

    Help! 1981 Corvette

Is there any reason other than performance that you want to change out the CCC? Check engine light on? There are plenty of people that can help you fix that The CCC is nowhere near the limiting factor in performance. First is the exhaust, spend money on true dual exhausts. Then are the...

Need honest opinion from 82 crossfire owners..my 24 year old wants to buy my car

I agree, It is a 30 year old car with a cross fire injection system that not to many mechanics are still familiar with. It will need a lot of attention. My suggestion if you want a corvette for $10k is to look at the late 90's C4. They are a great price right now, much more reliable...

    Help! 1980Corvette wiper motor

The first year I bought my corvette, as a 26 year old man, i tried to drive the vette in Massachussets winter. The first time there was any snow (just a dusting) the car would slide off the road while sitting at stopsigns, It was absolutely uncontrollable at speeds over 5mph, and the...

Help! Power locks only unlock... ideas???

The door locks are a relatively complex system that uses BOTH switches to make it work. If it is only working in one way, it is a 99% chance that one of the switches (or wiring to the switches ) is bad. Because of the complexity of the circuit, you cannot tell which switch (you may be able to...

    rear compartment doors

The 81 does not have a gasket to my knowledge.

    rear compartment doors

Sometime before 81 they had screws. but by time they got to 81, the frame is glued onto a plastic lid. But that said, when I replaced mine, the frames I bought had the holes (wrong for an 81) so I drilled holes in the plastic lid and screwed them together . Figured only the most astute...

    carpet and insulation

I put down Ensolite sound deadner I got from mid america and then covered that with Reflectix insulation I got from home depot. The difference is substantial. My son asked if I got a new radio because of how much better the acoustics got in the car. Much Cooler too!!!
