can i put a 160 degree thermostat in my 1990 with the stock chip?

Hi jamison, Here's my reasoning. The engine is designed to run at a specific temperature,so the sooner it gets there (without gunning it) efficiently the better. why impede this process ? As vetteoz has pointed out there has been much discussion on this subject, none of which has persuaded me to change. the argument for drilling a small hole or two in the thermostat is only valid as a measure to allow some circulation should it fail to open. Someone please prove me wrong. Roger.

I thought the holes were there to let air bubbles by. So, that you can burp the system and get the air out.

These engines are designed to run hot to help keep them internally clean among other reasons. Stay with the 180 degree stat.

thanks for all the help. im goin with a 180 stat.

the guy I had make me a piggy back chip told me to go to a 160 or use 91 or better gas. I did both.
