1954 Engine Paint

How was the paint applied to the engine at the factory to the 1954 Corvette? During assembly - so that the seals and gaskets were not painted or after assembly and the gaskets are painted over. All the books and manuals that I have that would show paint are in black and white. I see references to valve cover screws being painted but nothing about gaskets or water pump seals. Thanks in advance for your help.

The engine was painted after it was assembled. Couple of file photos below of early and later '54 engines for reference.
