HI,

New Here, and I seem to have aquired a 1957 283 ci Corvette Block.
Here are the numbers:

The Pad number is: FI0I6EC
Casting number is: 3 GM 3731548

rear pass side: H2 648

front driver's side: 0 G13 548

Can you guys tell me anything about it? It looks original...not bored out.
How much does a block like this go for? Is it worth boring out?

Thanks!

Welcom to the CAC.

3731548 was a 1957 only 283 block.

FI0I6EC

F is Flint manufactured engine.

1016 is October 16th build date.

EC is 283 4bbl with 3 speed overdrive trans in a full size passenger car; not Corvette. Sorry

The H2 is August 2nd and I think that the date should include a 6 for 1956. Example H26. not sure about what the 648 is. Maybe John knows.

I can see some real value in this block as a restoration block. The C could be carefully overstamped with the correct G stamp and it would then be a RPO 469C dual 4bbl 270 horse with manual trans. Very desirable. I wouldn't do it myself if I were going to sell it though. Let the buyer take the risk of making an error when swinging the hammer and turning it into scrap. I would check the bore diameter to see if it's ever been bored and get it tanked and magnafluxed. Then you know if you have a sound block to offer for sale and a buyer can be confident he is purchasing something usable.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info. I will take it down to the shop to get droped in the tank and magnafluxed.

Are these blocks kinda rare if in good condition?

Have a guy that is willing to buy this block. Just wondering what a fair price is if the block is in decent shape...any ideas?

57 blocks are getting harder to find all of the time. I sold a cracked one with other parts still attached to it several years ago for $50. It was just a 2bbl car block. You see real Corvette blocks priced from a few hundred to 3 or 4 thousand depending what they are. I guess you just have to negotiate with the prospective buyer to come up with a price that makes you both happy.

Check on Ebay and in Hemmings to see what is being asked. Of course asking and getting are 2 seperate things. Just off the top of my head cleaned with a magnaflux certificate it should be worth at least 3-500. Sucessfully restamped with the G maybe up to 2K or more to the right person.

I would wonder what you might be offered by some one into 57 Bel Airs. This might be pretty desirable to them just as it is. Check some of the specialty groups for those.

Don't want to preach on restrikes, but if it doesn't come out just right then no one will really want it and you could be denying someone in another branch of our hobby just what they need.........................Amen
