1963 SWC Restoration Update

Hi Ray,
Looks like you are still on the fast track with this project. Body looks great! Nice to be to the point of having all the body gaps taken care of. Good luck with the priming! Let us know how it goes.

she is looking great! :beer

did you decide to go with the Gel Coat or just sealer, primer and paint?

Hi Ray,

The body looks fantastic.

Will you be spraying the primer with the body on the car or will you litf the body off to start the paint process?

Happy New Year, welcome to 2006!
Take care,
Brian

Hi! Brian

I think I am going to leave the body on the chassis. Every thing is aligned up well and I will just take extra care when masking-off.

Hi! Gary

I was thinking of you over the Christmas holiday. Spent a few days with my son & daughter in law in Danbury Conn. area and I know you live in the Eastern part of NYS. I even got a chance to stop in Beacon NY and see where my 61 was originally sold. The dealership has changed hands from Shaw Motors to Healey Brothers, but it was still nice to visit.

Hope you and yours have had great holidays!

Ray

Healey Brothers Chevrolet has replaced Shaw Motors, the original dealership that sold the 1961 Corvette. Located in Beacon NY.

Hi! Barry

I did quite a bit of research and decided not to use the Gell-Kote. My painting experience has only been a few cars and I would like to have a little more knowledge on the use of gell-coat prior to my first attempt.

I plan on using all PPG products. I will seal the body using a DPLF primer and then a high build K-36 primer for the base. I also plan on using Kondar lacquer primer followed by the Ermine-White lacquer top coat. This may be an over kill but I am hoping for a nice looking paint job.

Happy New Year

Ray

I have no doubt she will look as beatiful as your other cars I've seen (seen on here in pics anyway! )

I can't wait til I see that lacquer laid down...when I repaint my 67, I'm definitely going lacquer,too.
If I get that 65 project, it's gotta be Goldwood Yellow lacquer. Where can you still get lacquer?

Your projet is looking REAL good.....can't wait for more pics.
Happy New Year, y'all...:beer

Dennis
if you can't purchase lacquer in MD, you can get it from Autocolorlibrary.com or you can still purchase it from PPG dealers in PA. I have two PPG dealers near me and can get lacquer from both of them.
In fact, before I ended up painting Baby in BC/CC I was just going to touch up her existing paint which was lacquer and bought a quart of the proper Milano Maroon in lacquer from one of them.
If you need their contact information just let me know and i'll get it to you

the painter I am hoping to use on my 60 said that k-38 was easier to use in his experience.....do you have previous experience with k-36....any comments on k-38? He said that it would build nicely and then was good to sand.......thoughts anyone?

Hi! First Gear

A friend that teaches Auto Body Repair also recommended K-38, he said that it sanded easier. When I called and ordered my primers from the PPG paint distributor they talk me out of using using the K-38. One of my concerns was repairs and scratches telegraphing through the paint and they said that I would receive a better build using the K-36.

I now have two wet coats of PPG DP-74-LF.

Looking better by the minute Ray. How did the K36 go on. Does it spray out with a bit of texture to it? Do they recommend a larger tip on the gun?

Ray,
Looking good! It will be back on the road before you know it!

Hi! Gary

I use a Devilbis HVLP spray gun for all heavy body materials and a conventional gun for the lacquer. I reduced the K-36 by the maximum recommended 20% and applied one extra coat to make up the build difference. The only problem I had was I mixed too large a quantity the first time and had to throw away about a pint. I mixed 20 onces after that and everything sprayed fine. The finish came out very smooth with no orange peal. I am very pleased with the results.

Hi! Barry,

I am aiming for completion for the fist day of spring after the first hard rain washes off the the winter road salt. I have had a week off from work from my real job, the progress will now slow down. I hope to complete the wet sanding this week.

Hi! Heaven,

Thanks for the compliment, but lets see what it looks like when I get the Ermine-White lacquer on it.

You know, looking at these old cars, isn't it amazing what The General was producing so long ago?

Seeing the reaction to these cars, on the street, says it all. People are blown away, and yet the design is so old.

We are very fortunate to own them. :upthumbs Keep restoring them everyone.

your progress

Hello Ray
Your car looks fantastic. I am very impressed with it and look forward to seeing more pics
