The 1967 L-88 hood uses cowl induction rather than the front scoop opening.

Since the fiberglass panel that holds the element and screen is bonded in place on the underside of the hood, how does one remove the element for cleaning/replacement without distorting the metal screen?

JohnZ?

I'd ask all the original '67 L-88 owners to go out to the garage and check theirs, but it's a rather small audience. ;LOL

'67, I don't know if these pics will help you any, but here is a '69 L-88 that's for sale on eBay. Looks pretty straightforward to me, but what do I know about L-88's? :L

Patrick,

The '68-'69 setup appears to be identical to the '67 except for the shape of the fiberglass panel under the hood.

So, I guess another way of asking the question is, "How do you remove the in-hood element from a '67-'68-'69 L-88 or '69 ZL-1 without distorting the screen that can be seen in your first photo?" :D

Maybe I should just take the screen over to the body shop (they have the fiberglass panel) and see if I can squeeze it through the opening. :D

Why the question? Because, until now, I never actually bonded the panel under my hood. I let it ride between the hood and the seal on the base. I intend to bond it on before the paint job.

By the way, I was talking to Fuelie about this stuff last evening.

Fuelie, it turns out that ZIP has replacement elements and seals for my L-88 induction.........cheap too! They're ordered.

Looks to me like it just slides snugly in place and when you lower the hood the base keeps it up tight. I don't see any other way it could work. :beer

To remove the filter from the hood, first you just pull out the screen. It is slightly larger than the opening, so you need to flex it a little to get it out. Get over zealous here and you could bend the screen, but a little care is all it takes. Once the screen is out, you can reach in and pull out the foam.

I've had mine in/out several times with no problem, but it does take a little practice. Emergencys help with this. Shortly after I got my L88 it backfired and the foam caught fire. This was a great opportunity to perfect my removal technique since the foam in the hood was flaming at the time. Unfortunately the screen got kind of hot and I had little circular scars on my fingers for several days... :hb

That's pretty much how mine looks using all original '69 parts. The metal screen "just" barely fits inside the air chamber opening. Hopefullt the above original L-88 engine is what mine will look like, except no A.I.R. hoses. Here's some shots from my SB.
