1967 Vent Window Crank Question

1967 Vent Window Crank Question. Would you please look at this crank and tell me if it is for a 1967 Vette. The numbers on the back are: 5288 and x5.

I'm sure others will chime in but it seems to me that all '67 GM cars used the same crank handles. The knob color was the only difference. You could buy replacements from the GM parts counter for several years in most colors but as the stock was used up they were superceeded by the black one.

I asked a friend on another forum who has had his 67 since 1970 about this. Here is his reply.



Tom:

67's have a unique handle, the knob is the same color as the interior (main window crank too). So, if they have a black interior, the knob should be black.
And the knob is installed with a black phosphate rivit, if the knob has a screw to hold it on, it has been changed.

The handle is chrome, part number cast in the back is 5719481 with T 2B on the opposite side.

Note that the knob here is teal blue.

The number is only 4 digits. The other number is a small x and 5. It has a rivet not a screw. Could it be one that came out later as a replacement?
 
'67 was unique as the only year that the knobs came in trim color. The chrome handle stayed the same for several years after and the knob was either black or clear. They did come off with a lot of use and we had aftermarket replacements at the dealership. Some were attached with a screw and some used a barbed stud that looked more factory when installed. It was a smooth head and prabably cad plated with squared edges to the head. You just layed the knob on a flat surface, inserted the stud through the handle like you would a screw and whacked it with a hammer driving it into the knob. Sometimes they were nice and tight and other times they weren't.

I really don't believe that there was a '67 Corvette specific handle of this type. This is one of those parts that GM used across all lines.

That is a factory installed black phosphate rivit in the crank handle pictured above.
