At 6:02 AM on November 13, 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand. Centered 56 km from Leithfield, the quake claimed the lives of two people as well as a 1972 Corvette that was suspended on a hoist at a mechanic's workshop.

Ian Walker isn't that upset that his home is now a disaster, but he's not too pleased that his prized 1972 Corvette is now hanging off a hoist with the nose of the car resting on the floor.

The earthquake was so strong that it shook the Corvette off the hoist causing it to come crashing down, nose first into the floor of the shop.

Walker has been with the the town of Kaikoura's fire brigade for 59 years and chief for 28 of those. He immediately responded the morning of the quake to help the citizens of the town and as a result, witnessed an incredible amount of destruction in its wake.

Luckily, Walker feels that Kaikoura will be fine as well as his 1972 Corvette.

Slightly off topic here, but I'll say it anyway.

The quake has left the town of Kaikoura cut off. Tourists and anyone else needing to get out of Kaikoura have been taken by helicopter, although navy ships have now arrived and taken some by ship. The roads in and out have been destroyed.

Where I am in Auckland is around 600miles from leithfield (the epicentre was 35miles from here), the earthquake set off the seismic sensors on the alarms at my work.

Good to see you posting, I was wondering how you fared.

Devastating News across the Ditch

Not good news for our Kiwi friends accross the ditch, but being married to a Kiwi girl and having visited New Zealand quite a few times, these guys will rebuild...

The 72 Vette is in good hands, although it came off the 2 posted hoist, it will be repaired like new.
The Kiwi guys are just a little bit crazier about their American Cars than us Aussies and this one will be put right.

Thoughts are going out from Oz to NZ...:beer

Thanks, I'm sure all those affected appreciate it.

Funny you say we're crazier about American cars than you Aussies. I'm not sure if this is true or not but; I've been told that there is more classic American cars per capita in NZ than there is in the USA.

Ive heard the same thing...

;LOLI have heard the same thing....

An old Kiwi mate I used to work with on the Gold Coast had two Stangs and one on the rotisorie...total 3 all up.

Wish my shed was full of Chevies!
