Important! 1974 vin#. Where?

There is one on the stamped on the frame, front of the engine, side of the transmission, and on the blue sticker on the inside of the door.

There's a partial VIN on the top rail of the frame almost directly above the driver's side rear wheel. might be hard to see.

If the engine and/or transmission are original, there will be a partial VIN stamp on those too.

The only complete VIN is on the windshield post. The vehicle certification label on the door should have a typed VIN on it, but these can be difficult to read or the tag could be missing.

The original engine and transmission have VIN derivitives stamped on them. The assembly instruction manual will show the locations. Engine and transmission were stamped with the same tool by the same worker on the assembly line before the engine and trans were installed in the frame.

The top of the driver's frame rail has a VIN derivitve stamped on it in two places. The first is about where your hip would be if you were sitting in the car. You cannot see this stamp with the body on the frame.

The second location is just in front of the #4 body mount. Some folks can see this number, others cannot. You can expect to have to clean some road gook off the top of the rail.

This particular frame stamp is remarkably clear and easy to see. The owner added the white paint.

I cannot see the stamp at this location on my '68.

Good luck.

Location of the vin near # 4 mount?

Mike, what side left or right and what is close to #4. Thanks Ralph

vin number on frame

I just bought stolen and recovery 74, car been sitting 20plus years and trying to get all paperwork straight. the number on the frame behind driver wheel says 14s410, but the 1 before the 4 does not show up anywhere when I put decoder in online. says it should be a J, T, or Z. anyone have any ideas?

The stamp you see is a VIN derivitive and not a complete VIN. That explains why it is not showing up on the VIN decoder sites. You are also short three digits after the zero. Should be 14S410xxx.

The J, T, and Z would be engine codes for the original engine installed in the car and would only be used in the complete VIN. They will not be in the VIN derivitive.

Is your car a coupe or a convertible? Do you know what the original engine might have been? Can you determine the last three digits after the zero? If you get the informaton together, you can determine what the original VIN was.

Is the blue vehicle certification label still on the driver's door? It has the complete VIN on it.

Read the posts up above. The frame stamping is a partial VIN derivative only. Compare yours to the photo.

no tags on door, does have a vin plate on windshield but highway dept says it is 1 number or letter wrong and they wont tell me which one! It is a 74 convertible l48 by the first 7 digits. No engine, how many numbers/letters should be on the frame behind the tire? and should it start with a 1?

Post your VIN. Based on what you've said, it's going to be 1Z67J4S410xxx. Not sure what the "highway department" is telling you.

...how many numbers/letters should be on the frame behind the tire?...

Three more than what you posted earlier. The three missing numbers are indicated by the xxx above.

...should it start with a 1?...

Yes. 1 is the code for Corvette. 4 indicates the model year (1974). S is the plant code for St. Louis. Your consecutive unit number is the 410xxx portion.
