Right now I have a stock alternator and am running electric fans and underdrive pulleys. The only problem is that at stoplights the voltage output goes way down, the fans slow down...and don't even mention at night when the headlights are on too.

I want to get a new alternator that's better than stock, the only problem is that I don't know what stock is.

Does anyone know what the max. current output is for the stock 1980 alternators?

Thanks

It was 61, 63 or 70 amp depending when your car was built and what options you have.

You can get rid of your problems by ditching the 'bubba' pulleys and fans. You don't need them and are suffering the drawbacks of these add-ons.

You can also check with these folks http://www.alternatorparts.com/gm_alt_repair_upgrade_kits.htm
They offer kits that you can install in your case to increase the output.
I have to agree with the above response about going back to a standard pulley.
Do NOT use a 1 wire alternator as they do not produce enough voltage at idle and low RPM cruise to maintain the system.

Ok, I'll put the stock fan and pulleys back on and let you guys know what happens.

Thanks.

alternators put out 14.2 volts
