1982 Bright Blue
Hi:

I have a 1982 with relatively low mileage, about 23000 miles (36000 km). I would like to change the oil. The owner's manual recommends a 10W30 SF rated oil. This car being old enough, I have found that the SF rating is out dated (they are not rated around SL and SM).

I am wondering if I should be buying a high-mileage oil or whether I shoudl be going with a more conventional oil. The car runs great, no blue smoke.

Thanks in advance

Without turning this into an oil thread......the main thing is to change your oil before you store it every fall. I put 1,000 miles a year on mine and change the oil the same time I put it away to keep the varnishes and other things that suspend in the oil out of the motor when stored.

I've started running truck/suv/diesel oil because they still contain zink vs the new auto oils which have been scaled back in zink (for emission reasons) which helps prevent wear.

Later,
JU

I would use a conventional 10W30 motor oil rather than a high milage oil. The difference in high milage oils are additives to swell the seals that would normally be getting brittle in a high milage engine. Unfortunately, they will soften the seals and cause premature failure if there is not a problem with them already. If you have no problems, use a standard oil. You should have no problems with it.
The older SE/SF/CE designations are lower than the present numbers and the newer oils are much better for the wear and viscocity v/s temperature is concerned.

Thanks. I agree. Should have done it in the fall. Just had no time.

I'll use a regular 10W30

Thanks guys

If you go to the NCRS DB or the Corvette Forum and do a search on oils you will see that Duke makes a great case for using a diesel rated oil for our older cars. THese diesel rated oils have higher scrubbing power for our engines that produce more pollutants (just like a diesel) and they have a better chemical additive package that helps our older engines stay healthy. A lot of the folks on these two forum back up this assertion that diesal rated oil is the way to go. I won't go into what I remember but I did copy the info and now use it in my 72.

The one oil I really like and trust is the Castrol GTX 10W30. I always use this oil and also if you want best results, I always add some LUCAS oil treatment at each oil change. It will be good for friction, seals etc ...

I've always used this configuration in all of my cars and trust me Castrol GTX 10W30 plus LUCAS oil treatment will make your Engine really happy.
