1983 Corvette

I don't know about exec's driving the only 83's, I'd always understood they were only used as prototype test cars and never put on the road at all...but whatever they saw originally, yes, there is only one remaining, the rest were destroyed. The last of the 83's is this one sitting at the NCM in Bowling Green, these are a few shots I took of it when I was there last year.

Just to add to the confusion I was just reading an article in the current (Sept. 2007) issue of "Corvette Enthusiast". It mentions that there were 66 83s built and 65 were destroyed. I don't know what their source is.

Don't know about their source, but that shouldn't add to any confusion...they're saying that there is one left, which would be the white one at the NCM.

I think the consensus concerning the number of 1983 cars built anywhere from 43 to 47. All of these cars had 1983 VIN numbers that showed the 1983 model year. I don't believe that Corvette Enthusiast has their numbers right. That would be 20 more cars than most articles show and a 50% difference would be hard to explain.


Some of the '83's were kept at the B.G. plant for verification of assembly line build verification and the balance went to GM engineers for all sorts of testing including crash testing.

If any of the 83' were driven by management, it was for getting feedback on the car and not as a perk or company car. The cars would have probably had Michigan "manufacturer" plates when they were driven on the street.
