I was reading the newest issue of Street Rodder an article on TCI Automotive's kit to upgrade the 700R4. While it mainly dealt with a street rod application of a later model transmission, it also mentioned that there is now a kit for earlier 700's.

I went to the website and they offer a couple of options for an '84 Corvette. I have no problems with shifting or performance the way I drive it, but was wondering if newer technology might give me an extra kick in the pants if I wanted it. Plus, maybe it would help an aging tranny last a bit longer.

Anyone tried to do this?? Street Rodder says it is an easy DIY.

There is a guy over on one of the other forums that does not have much time for TCI. I have read lots of his posts, he is a petty cool guy and very knowledgeable. Seems to me if you want a high performance transmission you have to start with a whole unit and not just a change in some parts. Just my opinion, in any regard, good luck.

I think the tranny in it now is fine. I was just wondering if newer products might enhance performance over what was available in 1984.

Thanks

I've got an '84 700R4 and best I can offer is changing the fluid ever 2 or 3 years or so. No performance suggestions... I'm approaching 200k and the only problem I've ever had (knock on wood!) was occasionally not locking up in 4th. That can be a serious problem as it will cause it to overheat it not locked up in 4th. I had to drive it in 3rd until I could chase the problem out and fix it. Turned out to just be a brake (pedal) switch intermittently making a bad connection.

Good luck,

Yeah, after all the posts and doing searches, I think I will just install a drain plug to keep what fluid I can drain out and new filter every spring.

When it comes time to rebuild, then I will really get into it.

I've never understood why they don't install drain plugs in automatic pans. If mine had a drain plug I'd probably do it once a year instead of every 2-3 years like I do now. Next time I have the pan off I might consider having a plug put on the pan.

(come to think of it I could probably make the same comment around the differential too!)
