I am having a problem with the speedometer working on my 84. All other features seem to be working on my display except for the frequent temporary dark screen. I have checked plastic gear in the transmission and the permanent magnet generator and all seems well. As I understand the speed signal is sent from the transmission to the ECM before it goes to the display. Maybe my issue is in the ECM. Any comments, thoughts, suggestions, experiences would be appreciated.

Also has anyone replaced their original dash display with the old school type gauges which are now available? I realize this is expensive, but if you like your car and plan on keeping it this might be the way to go. Thanks for any replies.

no speed sensor signal would set code and turn on check engine light. I believe vss signal goes to cluster and the then to ecm. I would have cluster checked. this may help

Does your odometer work? How about your cruise control? Fuel mileage? If those work (as you implied), the problem is in the electronics of the digital module. Batee.com is a good source for repair.
