Help! 84 Dash Display Question

Question! Does the dash display have any effect on the operation of my 84 Corvette? I know it is connected to the ECM and there is an exchange of information between the two, but is it necessary for the dash display to be working correctly for my car to perform as it should? The reason I ask is everything seems to be working correctly on my dash display except my speedometer. I have actually driven my car without the dash display connected and it seems to run ok except for the warm startup problem I posted earlier. Thanks for reading this post and any information you can provide will be appreciated.

I don't see how the dash could effect the running of the vette...

The dash receives info from the electrical system. It doesn't pass anything to the ECM.
