Ok, put in a new manifold gasket, put it all together, ran fine, no lights. Noticed a hiss, and found a vacuum leak. It's that aluminum tube on the driver's side which runs between the wiring harness and runners, connects with a very short rubber tube to the intake manifold. I replaced that rubber tube.

NOW I'm getting a code 35! It's not in my Chevy Service manual, so I don't even know where to begin! Help!

Two questions in a row that have got you guys stumped?!?!

One other thing that I just thought about: I have an aftermarket custom programmed chip that I've been running since last year. Is it possible that an aftermarket chip could set a code that normally isn't set? In researching, I've found that in other GM vehicles, a code 35 is the IAC.

How are you grabbing your codes? If you're using a paper clip or something like that, are you sure your counting the flashes correctly? I have no idea of what a Code 35 in a C4 represents. ;shrug

per my 88 service manual there are no code 35's

code32: EGR circuit
code33: MAF sensor circuit
code34:MAF sensor
code36: MAF burn off circuit

those are the only codes prefixed with a "3" Since you were nowhere near the MAF, I'd recheck the code and see if maybe it's a code 32

I have a scan tool that output the actual value of 35. No counting of flashes necessary.

Yeah, my 86 Helm manual doesn't have a code 35 in there either.

Are the codes a function of the PROM or the computer? If the prom, is it possible for the programmer to add functionality to the chip?

Not in an 86 which like my 88 has a "READ ONLY" chip. I'm stumped however on the code 35. I'd be interested to see if anybody chimes in though. Maybe it's an old code that hasn't been cleared. Why not try clearing the computer and rechecking for the code???????

Already cleared the computer a couple of times.

Not sure what you mean by a read only chip. With the right knowledge, software, and hardware, one can burn their own chips.

You can always have a chip burned and installed. What you CAN'T do is program the chip that came with the car. Not on the older models anyway as it's a "read only" It's what the "RO" in PROM stands for.

Ok, finally figured this out (it's been a while, since it's crap weather in Michigan)...

Very strange, turned out to be a bad wire going into the MAF sensor. Why it was turning up a code that doesn't exist is beyond me!!

I'm still curious about the Code "35". It must be a misprint in the scan tool? :L

You know what they say about computers, right? "Garbage in - garbage out." ;)

If someone plugged in an incorrect digit at the factory where the scan tool was programmed ... ;shrug

I don't know Ken, I don't get it.

Nobody has yet answered my question as to what part throws the code, the PROM, or the COMPUTER. If it's the PROM, I have a chip by a 3rd party, and certainly it could a programming mistake on his part.

I've never had this problem with the scan tool in the past.

I doubt it's the PROM, but a call to the scanner manufacturer might get an answer...to both questions. I lean to the ECM side.

Then you can post it for those of us scratching our heads.

Hi,

I am late jumping in here but just a thought; Check the codes using the paperclip method. If you get code 35 flashing on the dash the odd code is coming from the ECM. If you are not getting a 35 using the paperclip it is time to look at the scanner.

hi larry
according to one of my books it's -idle speed control.

carmen

That's for other GM cars, however, not an '86 Vette.
