Oil is one of those subjects that becomes emotional and draws LOTS of opinions. I have my favorite brands, but I won't bother listing them.

The fact is that oil is a product that has gone through drastic and miraculous improvements over the last 30 years or so. As long as you choose the correct weight range for your climate as indicated in most any owners manual AND use the latest S classification which I think is up to J now, in any premium brand of your chosing, you will be fine AS LONG AS you change it regularly.

I would think that for your climate 10W30 would be a good year around weight, but check your manual. You know your own temperature ranges better than I.

Good luck,

Mobil 10w30 synthetic with a good filter, K&N, Mobil1, or AC. My engine builder and my brothers both recommend 10w30. I put 5w30 in my Escort and it looks like water, I will never dump that into my Corvette.

if you live in a climate that gets to below 0* F during the winter, and you're likely to drive during those times, then use 5w-30. otherwise, 10w is perfectily fine.

synthetic is utterly unnecessary, ESPECIALLY in an L98 engine (which has an oil cooler). LT1 engines dropped the oil cooler and thats when the switch went to synthetic for the factory fill.

i agree with the earlier post about brands. if you feel rich and want to pay for mobil 1, great. any decent brand will do, as long as you change it regularly (once a year, minumum).

My '88 calls for 5W-30 factory specs.
But it has 130K miles, so I put 10W-30, because its a little thicker.
I use Mobile 1 synthetic oil.

I use either Mobile1 or K&N fuel filter.

Wayne,
Your car is similar to mine.. I used Mobil 1 for an oil change in early June, and I had another Mobil 1 change yesterday (10-30). I'll change again in July 06.

I read somewhere that GM used 5W30 to squeeze out a few more 10th's MPG from the EPA mileage test so then they HAD to recommend the thinner oil. The oil filler cap even usually says to use 5W30 but so what?
I agree with Wayne and others that the 10W30 seems like a better idea. I also think it would have better lubricating qualities because the viscosities are closer together and the oil molecules would not have such long polymers and thus would not break down as quickly.

I use Mobile One 5W-30. Thinner oil at start up is not a bad thing. In fact, I have been thinking about switching to 0W-30 for the winter! However, I drive mine in the cold! This pic was from the beginning of May. It has only snowed twice so far this season, but today I prepped my for the winter, new wiper blades, oil change and I put the hardtop back on! I would stick with the 5W-30 unless you have oil pressure problems due to wear.

That scene looks like it would be really fun, NOT! Lite up the fireplace and have a snifter of good brandy until it gets better.

Its snowing right now and I just drove my vette home in it!!! I would take new pics but its dark!
However, 5w-30 is the oil that Chevy designed these engine to run on!
