Hello all,

I am from Austria and currently have a customers 1987 CTTC in the shop for engine overhaul and performance increase. The car came from Switzerland and is a red/red model which is in pretty good shape and got for the age little miles (50k) on it. It also has a 4+3 tranny which makes it real fun to drive

I spoke a few times with people from Callaway but either did not get the answers or have been promised to be calles/emailed back which of course never happened.

I have some questions which sort of dictate the upcoming revamp of the engine as customer is seeking for 600hp on engine. What puzzles me is that according to the VIN it is indeed a 1987 model which should have the 342hp engine, but the dash plague in the console says 382hp which would indicate the 88 hp rating. Callaway has no way of verifying what engine has been shipped with that car. It also came with those tiny Warner-IHI turbos wheras I ahve been told that 88 models had the larger Rotomaster T04 turbos already. Hmmmm, what gives, I can not believe that someone in Switzerland has just changed that dash plague, I would be surprised if you would be able to get that plague just like that from Callaway !

Any idea ?

what we plan to do is to increase the very low 7.5:1 CR to 8.5:1 with new rods and pistons (has Cosworth pistons in it), rework the heads or change to supplied Edelbrock heads, use a Accell Superram + 58mm throttle body, exhaust work, modern camshaft and pump up the boost to 18 psi and add modern boost controllers. Emulating the chip on the dyno and see what we can get.

Where I failed is to get some flow sheets of those old Warner-IHI turbos, would anyone knwo what their max supportable hp level per unit would be or whom to contact for those compressor maps? I asked around here and nobody has anything, Mitsubishi who later on bought IHI doesn't have anything in the archives either. Any help would be really appreciated !

thanks a lot in advance for any help in that matter

Heinz

Welcome Coolchevy...

I have been through your location many times. I lived in Germany and Italy for some time. Have you looked up Garage Huber in Bonstetten Switzerland. They are authorized Callaway dealers and have a webpage www.corvettetotal.ch Maybe they can assist you. One of the members of this forum is in Switzerland. TripleV. He has been involved with Callaway's in Europe for some time.

Since the rotomasters are basically unavailable, to get 600hp youre going to have to go to custom turbos with a new wastegate setup.

It sounds like youre on the right track. Larger turbos are all you need, build that motor strong and boost it up. 600hp is easy with the right parts.

Heinz,

Welcome to the Callaway Forum.

Usually the people at Callaway are helpful but I wonder if you were trying to talk to them just before the Carlisle Corvette show Aug 25-28. If so then maybe they were tied up with preparations.

Yes, the 87's had the smaller IHI turbos. I don't have any pictures of the 1987 dash plaque so I don't know what it is supposed to say. My 1991 has no HP designation on it, only the car number.

BTW, I love Wein. I have visited on 2 occassions. Great place, Great country.

Greetings,

-Luigi
