1987 want stay running

Happy New Year to ALL.
PROBLEM: I want on an errand, VET running fine. Get back in the VET it wouldn't stay started. Plenty of gas and didn't see anything visible wrong. The only to keep it running I have keep giving it gas. Any suggestion?
;help

could be lots of things. A stuck egr valve or some major vaccum leak. would be the first place i would look

hmm

Like Len said more info is needed. best thing to do would be get a GM Code breaker from autozone. If you don't already have one. They are about $29.00 Chances are it's something electrical. Diagnostic will pin point it.
GOOD LUCK

Dan

check for codes.
I had the same problem, mine would be fine and then it would seem to surge and then it wouldn't idle, then it would surge again and be fine. checked codes said O2 sensor that wasn't it even though I replaced it and the IAC valve did the same thing later on down the road. took it on a long trip and noticed the the MPG was going crazy said I was getting 80 MPG!!!! Well took it to the dealer and they said it was ECM because he couldn't get the ECM to down load codes correctly replaced the ECM no more problems.

Thanks guys. Funny thing had to give it gas and shift to netural all the way home. Got home it stayed running. Took it around the block cut it off and started started going dead again. Will check out what everyone suggested.......

Thanks. I have to figure out how to keep it running first before I can run the test. I think I can have the MAF sensor tested off the car. Which relay are you refering to? Also, you don't think it's the fuel pump?. I was planning on changing it out. The car has 106110 mile on it and none of the above have been changed out.
:confused

no idle too!!!!

My 86 does the same thing. It starts good in the morning and I drive it to work about 18 miles on the X-way. Park it for 4 hours come out to go to lunch and it won't idle. I'll keep my foot in it and jump up on the X-way for a few miles and it will be OK for a while. Then when I least expect it it will do the same thing ,start and die. It may go as long as a month before acting up again. There have been times when sitting over night it will do this no idle. There are no codes showing up either. When it does this no idle thing if it is just driven a few miles it goes back to working fine. Mr Badwrench is puzzled....I guess I will have to put the old brain to work and hunt it down. Any hints will be helpful...Thanks in advance....Bob Yates..... A.K.A. Mr Badwrench. I have the busted knuckles to prove it.....
