1988 L-98 Oil Pan

While having my oil changed, I was 'invited' down into the pit to view my oil pan. The tech was afraid to remove the drain plug because the pan was bent very close to the plug. It must have been bottomed out some time before I purchased it.

I am in need of a replacement oil pan but the Eckler price of $209 (just for the pan) is way too much.

Anyone out there got one in good shape or know a good source?

Same thing happened to me awhile back. I hope it's okay to post here, I got a used oil pan from Dan at this site:

They're very professional and ship quickly. I called around here in Honolulu and couldn't find one for less than $300. Dan sent me a used one in great shape, can't remember how much I paid but it was very reasonable.

Oil Pan Installation

Hi Everyone,

It is time that I do more of my own maintenance. I had to have my alternator changed yesterday along with the serpintine (sp?) belt. $281.

I have done several smaller projects with the help of many forum members. I have my oil changed at a dealership using all Mobil 1. It runs $50.

Don Penning answered a post concerning finding a used oil pan. I asked him about doing the change myself and I thouht I'd post my question to Don here also to see what everyone thinks:


I need to change the oil pan and the transmission oil pan. Once I locate used parts, I can have them changed for me or do it myself. I don't change the oil myself because I can't get under the car.

I have seen floor jacks at Sam's Club (Michelin 3 1/2 ton Floor Jack) for $60. It seems to me that if I purchased one of these and some jack stands, I could then get under my car to do the oil changes myself and probably change the oil pan and transmission oil pan. This would quickly pay for the jack.

Are there any issues that a non-mechanic may run into in changing the oil pan or transmission oil pan?

Can the floor safely lift the vette (is there a lift point)?

Wow, you must have really bottomed out!
There should be marked "jack points" on the lower sides in front of/behind the wheel wells.
You guys should buy verts, that cross frame takes the beating and saves everything else and can be straightened once up on the hoist.
I had my air pump and serpentine just changed for $200 CANADIAN! Why is it you guys pay so much for stuff down there?

It had to have been done before I purchased it 'cause I don't remember doing it.

I was actually pleased at the cost for the alternator since I have had two changed in the past on Nissan Maximas and those wer just under $400 (10 years ago).

I just need to do more myself. The alternator was only $138. I could have saved $100 if I had changed it myself. Surely changing the alternator is not difficult???

Maybe we should start driving up to your place for service!?!? I've always wanted to see Canada...

I would change your alternator (labour only) for an $8 bottle of pop-skull yankee vodka!
It is a fairly quick fix and you should pick up a service manual for your car. Many things like that can be DIY.
