I took my 1989 car out today and it was running normally for a couple of hours, parked and than returned to have it idle rough with major hesitation upon acceleration. There are no check engine lights on and no other indications that would help diagnose the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated?!!

Don't know, I'm not a expert, but:
Could be alot of things.
Try looking at the fuel supply:
Maybe dirty injectors, or dirty fuel filter.

Or maybe it will go away the next time you start it.

Have you noticed your car doing it all the time if you park it hot and then come back and drive it when its cold? you could try some Chevron Techron use two bottles every 6,000 miles or so.

Did you change altitudes? Just a thought. If their are no codes then possibly an injector problem at cold start. Let us know.

thanks for the advice. added 1 bottle of techron and will see if that helps,.

Did some more testing and found car runs fine when cold but when it warms past 160 degrees the idle roughens and it exhibits strong hesitation on acceleration. about 15k since tuneup, no codes.

My car had been running rough before I spun the bearing. Today when the shop fired it up it ran very bad and it was the oxygen sensor that the computer finally picked up, dont know if this helps you or not.

Hi, I have a 91 that did the same thing and the problem to worse as time went along. Ultimately the engine ran so poorly I had to find the problem. The car had been in the
Chevy garage and one private garage. In short, there is a charcoal filter cannister (spelling?) in the right rear quarter panel that handles fumes from the gas tank. The line from there goes forward to the fuel injection system. Anyway, the cannister had ruptured internally and the small granules from inside had completely filled the line going forward the sensor it attaches to. No codes showed up, but it sure caused my car to idle rough, steady pedal was rough and as I said enventually shut me down. I dont know if this applies to your 1987, but hope the info helps. Boz

thanks Boz, I will check that out.I see you live in socal, Do you recomend a shop that is good with corvettes. I live in redondo beach. Thanks Jeff.

It might not be a bad idea to change your oxygen sensor. They are not that expensive and easy to do. With fuel prices the way they are, some people say that routinely changing it can keep fuel economy at the highest potetial. I dont buy into that all that much. How much fuel is in the tank, or does it do it no matter how much fuel you have?

Good luck

I decided to take it to a local shop and they found a leaky intake manifold gasket to be the main culprit along with a worn cap and plug wires, Also even though I changed the oil every 3k miles there was a lot of sludge buildup under the manifold, even plugging an oil return hole! I blame short drives and not enough engine heat to keep it from sludging up. Also lots of carbon buildup in several intake ports? Guess I'll take more care to warm it up now, Jeff...
