1991 Engine Quits, Won't Idle

The problem I have is that the car will not idle initially after I start it. I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it going. The "Off" button for the heater/air conditioner blinking for a period of time is the only other odd sign of something being wrong. After running it for while the "Off" button stops blinking and it seems to idle fine. Other than that, sometimes when coming to a stop light the engine kills after idling roughly for a few seconds. Seems like I might have an idle sensor going bad or something? I did add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator last year, but the car seemed to run just fine for a period of time after that addition. I dont think that has anything to do with it? Any help would be much appreciated.

What makes you think that?

Thanks for the help.

One of the troubleshooting tips in my 86 service manual says if the car won't idle then disconnect the MAF. If it starts and idles fine, replace it. I'm assuming that you're getting faulty data but with it disconnected there's some default value being used. They also said to open the distributor bypass line (no clue...) and if it starts and runs fine then to replace the pickup.

it might be map sensor. the 91 doesnt have a maf .

1st check all your vacumm lines. one of those lines is connected to your map sensor, located on the pass. side of the plenum. then check the IAC motor, this is located on the bottom side of the throttle body. The IAC motor controls the idle when the throttle blades are in the closed position.

Yep I agree with 8388..

As for the AC blinking, next time it blinks.. hold the Up and Down fan button in at the same time, once the display shows '-00' press the auto fan button to reveal the codes

the code are in section zero on this link
