1992 LT1
My 1992 LT1 vette has 61K miles. I bought it used. I am experiencing severe hesitation and backfiring issues after the car is warm starting at 2000 RPM and eventually at idle. A shop informed me I will probably need a new distributor et al and while they are there they will change the water pump. The shop will first run engine diagnostics to evaluate. Does this sound right?

So far.
The OptiSpark may have water getting into it. It is between the water pump and the block so they have to remove the water pump anyway. At this age, if it needs OptiSpark work, it should have the water pump replaced also. No point in replacing the Opti only to have an old water pump start leaking the next month and fry the new Opti.

Thanks, this is exactly what the shop told me. The Shop, Warren Auto and Tire in Warren, Mi, has worked on my car before. I got a call back stating it may just be the ignition coil. He is starting there since the problem only happens when the car has been running and it hot. I do appreciate your reply. Let me know if you agree with this latest assessment.

Have you ever talked to Dennis Tracy at Tracy Performance? He is very knowledgeable and willing to provide plenty of advice. Deals only with corvettes. Not far from the GM tech center.

thanks saauriwarrior. I will call him today. Warren Auto and Tire has replaced the ignition coil and is testing now. If this doesn't fix the problem I will probably move. thanks again.
