service ride control light came on--dealer found bad gear that connects ZO7 connection unit to top of shock--must replace complete shock--about $500 says the dealer--the gear on top of the shock is still ok--only the gear on the end of the sending unit is bad--dealer left it disconnected--said the shock will still work ok but the ZO7 switch on the console no longer controls the ride that is selected--question--can this gear unit be purchased & installed on the shock?

I'm not sure but it sounds like the actuator is bad rather than the shock. If that's the case, you don't need a new shock but the actuator that connects to the top of the shock.

BTW, you can get new FX3 shocks in MidAmerica for around $200 but that does not include the actuator.

Good luck on solving your problem.

I have the same type of problem on my 92 with FX3. The gear on the RF shock is broken. The teeth on the gear is fine and the whole thing is still on the shock rod with the little shear pin intact, it's just the lower part of the pot metal gear that is broken and that is where the stop that contacts the shock rod is located. The actuator is fine and even turns when the ignition is on as is should for the self-test procedure.

GM or the retail suppliers do not have the gear so the best bet would be to contact Bilstien directly at 1-800-537-1085 to see what they recomend. Ask for Bill Hindorf in the Tech dept. Bilstien can rebuild these shocks at a much cheaper price than the $200 or so you see listed in the catalogs.

Let us know how things turn out!!
