I was wondering what you guys might think this is.

I had replaced the headlights on my car and tested them. All seemed fine. I then went to start it and all I got was one click. It was the first day we had a really cold night so I thought the battery just gave out.

Went and bought an Exide, put it in and the car started. I drove it to work this week. Being paronoid I had the digital voltage gage on and watched it like a hawk. Seemed to stay around 14.2 - 14.6 volts. Got out of work, stopped at my parents house. Again watching the voltage, no problems. Went to leave and "click" dead again???

I didn't have much in the way of tools over there but for a while the interior lights work but after a couple more tries even they went blank. There was a clicking niose coming from the dash. I think it was a relay trying to open/close but didn't have the juice.

Hooked up a battery charger, nothing. All I saw was the chargers current meter bounce up and down to the beat of the clicking noise. It drew no current to speak of.

I removed the neg cable and measured the battery. It seemed to be around 12 volts but when I hooked it back up the voltage dropped to about 8 volts.

I don't think it is the alternator since the voltage stayed above 14. Since it did this to the original battery and the new one I don't think it was just a bad battery. With my luck all the planets were in line that day and I hapened across 2 bad ones. So I think there has to be something pulling it down and it seems to be intermittant.
I'm kind of guessing at a shorted starter motor?

Right now it is at the dealer. They told me the new battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge at all. So I had to pick it up and buzz 20 miles to where I bought it, get an exchange and rush back to the dealer with another new one.

They didn't get to look at it today so I hope they can tomorrow.

If it wasn't getting cold I might have had it towed to my place to work on it but I just wanted it done. I told AAA not to jump it as I wanted it to be in the broken state at the dealer so they can't say it works fine now.
Any ideas?

I've been having a slow turnover problem for some time (Ford van, shopping for my C4 now). Thought it was batt, alt, bad conn etc.

Turns out it was the solinoids (sp.) One near the bat, one on the starter (built in) Seems the solinoids build up resistance (crud) from the spark each time its used.

Replaced starter & solinoid near bat. Problem gone.

Not sure if it applies to you but just an idear. My Massachusetts accent. People make fun in Calif.

Exide has been having recent financial issues.............and qc .....may have suffered.............since mr. lutz is now @GM........IMHO...........Personally............I'd go w/ a big Interstate........in fact I did go ..........w a big Interstate...:w :w

The other thing is a "vampire" drain, real pita to find. Put a meter on the batt & start pulling fuses, if voltage goes up when you pull a fuse you found the circuit that has the vampire. Digital meter best.

A much easier way to find a drain is to use the multimeter in the ammeter mode. Connect it in series with a battery cable and measure the draw. It should ben .1 Amps or less. If it has a significant draw, then follow froggy's suggestion of pulling fuses one at a time while observing ammeter. If after all fuses are removed you still have the draw, begin disconnecting circuits of things that work whether or not the key is on, such as lights, horn, etc.

It sounds, however, like you got a bad battery.

Good luck,

The other thing

Sometimes only 1 of the diodes in the Alt's rectifier bridge ( converting AC to DC) leaks or shorts open.... giving you the correct voltage reading on the dash gauge..but not the battery... check the ALT output for AC voltage it should be less than 1 volt @ idle.

FYI

Vig!

Thanks for the tips.
The car has been at the dealer all week now (3 days not touched:mad ).
I got the the new battery (exchanged broken new one) and delivered it to them.
I finally got an answer Friday from them and it was what I expected.
NPF (no problem found)
Thay are keeping it over the weekend to see if there was a slow draw or not.
This is going to turn out to be the most exspensive battery I ever bought !

I really hope it was just a bumb battery. I will be gun shy now for a while until I believe it is fixed.

Thanks for the info about Exide too.
When I returned the battery to BJ's the girl actually told me to just take the refund and try someplace else. I think she new there have been a lot of problems but couldn't say so.
I didn't listen and just got another one while I was there. :hb

Hope this one works, next one is back to old faithful, the Diehard.

We'll see Monday when I hope to get my new baby back.

I am very suspect about this dealer. They need to keep it over the weekend to check for a battery drain? Do they not have an ammeter anywhere in that shop? Do they not have anyone who knows how to use an ammeter in that shop?

They are either feeding you a bunch of crap because they can't get to your car very quick, or they are completely electrically incompetent.

Good luck,

This may seem simple; but have you checked the threads where the battery leads connect to the battery. Had the same trouble and bought new batteries. The threads are located so far in that they are easy to over look. Cleaned them with a wire brush and the old "dead" battery started right up.
Good luck, George

Well at the moment I finally got the car back.
I ended up returning the first Exide and got another one. Brought it to the dealer and they EVENTUALLY put it in. Car runs fine? I have driven it the past 2 days with no problems now.

I may very well have gotten a bum Exide as the dealer claims?
I know I will be writting to Exide about this and try and get them to reimburse me for the costs associated with this mess.

Just have to hope it keeps running !

Thanks for all the tips and ideas. I know more of what to look for next time.

UPDATE

Well the second battery is working so I must have gotten a bad one to start.
I sent a complaint to Exide online and they replied with a suggestion to send my receipts and story to their customer service group.
Did that and still no responce.
I don't think they will admitt to any problem and work to resolve this issue.

My advice,
DON'T buy an Exide.

From now on I stick with Diehard.
If it ever fails there is allways a Sears near by to replace it.
If the Exide dies I don't know how to get it fixed?

I think they have a 90 full refund so I may take them up on this and get my Diehard !

Another example of saving a couple bucks can cost you several hundred !!
